Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair
Removing and installing sealing ring for crankshaft belt pulley
Component overview
Removing sealing ring for crankshaft belt pulley
1. Detach lock mount.
2. Remove Y-shaped pipe.
3. Mark the direction of movement of the drive belt with chalk.
4. Relieve and remove drive belt. To do this, use an open-ended wrench (a/f 30) to turn the belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt from the tensioning roller. Relieve the belt tensioner slowly.

5. Position arm bracket 9679 in the belt pulley and turn it until it locks.
Caution: Risk of damage!
^ If the tool slips or if the tool is faulty, the wings can be damaged as a result of excessive forces!
^ Use a 1-inch tool only!
^ Ensure that the tool is seated correctly!
^ Never use the special wrench, socket wrench insert 9714, for undoing or tightening!
6. Position a large torque wrench and undo the central screw (a/f 27). Do not use the screw again.
7. Remove the central screw and pull the belt pulley down and forward.
8. Undo the four fastening screws and remove the cover and sealing ring.
9. Clean the contact surface of the sheetmetal cover.

Warning: Risk of damage!
^ Sealing lip can be damaged!
^ Never pull the sealing ring from the assembly sleeve!
^ Do not touch the sealing lip!
1. Place seal with assembly sleeve across crankshaft.
2. Tighten the two top fastening screws (M6 x 50) and the bottom fastening screws (M6 x 12) by hand. Tighten the screws crosswise to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.)
3. Pull off assembly sleeve evenly from sealing ring.
Note:
^ If the sealing flange on the belt pulley is slightly rusted, polish the rust off with a special polishing cotton.
^ If the sealing flange is badly corroded or contains deep grooves, replace it.
Note:
^ A feather key is inserted into the crankshaft. When fitting the belt pulley, ensure that the feather key slots into the groove in the belt pulley.
^ The feather key must not fall into the engine.
4. Position the belt pulley on the crankshaft stub. Then press the belt pulley slightly in the direction of the engine, simultaneously twisting it until it slips definitively in the direction of the timing case cover. When doing so, pay attention to the feather key.
5. Screw the new central screw into the crankshaft.
6. Position arm bracket 9679 in the belt pulley and turn it until it locks.
7. Tighten the central screw to 250 Nm (185 ft. lbs.).
8. Attach torque angle disc 6690-1. Attach a magnetic foot to a metal part and set the scale by turning the pointer to 0.
Note:
^ The screw is turned further by a 90° torque angle.
^ This angle corresponds to the cylinder angle.
9. Turn the central screw again through a torque angle of 90°.
10. Fit drive belts.
11. Install the Y pipe.
12. Fasten the lock mount.
