Removing and installing crankshaft sealing ring on flywheel side

Required tools

Removing crankshaft sealing ring on flywheel side

Note:
^ The description relates to one drive plate.
^ In the case of a manual transmission, the double-mass flywheel is removed and installed in accordance with the relevant description.

1. Remove transmission.

2. Block drive plate. To do this, attach toothed segment 9538/1 to a screw hole in the crankcase so that at least one tooth is in contact with the starter teeth.

3. Remove drive plate. To do this, loosen the ten diagonally opposite fastening screws.
4. Take off drive plate.

Note:
^ If a crankshaft stub is dirty or slightly rusted, this will damage the new sealing ring when it is fitted.
^ The crankshaft stub must be cleaned before the old sealing ring is removed so that no particles of dirt can reach the engine.
^ Use a metal-polishing pad (e.g. Never Dull) to do this.

5. Clean the crankshaft stub. The crankshaft stub must not be dirty or rusty. If necessary, clean this with brake cleaner and grind off any rust with a metal-polishing pad (e.g. Never Dull).

6. Using the special tool, drift punch (1 mm tip) 167, beat a small hole into a non-rubberized spot (rectangular window in the ring) of the sealing ring.

7. Screw in the extractor tip. Knock out the extractor tip using slide hammer kit 168 in conjunction with the sealing ring.

^ Never deform or touch the sealing lips.

1. Connect the sealing ring and sleeve to the tool.

2. Position the centering device on the crankshaft stub. Pay attention to the centering pin when doing this. Tighten the two fastening screws to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).

3. Position the fitting bell and tighten the central screw (a/f 19) to 25 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).
4. Undo the fitting bell and screw it down.
5. Undo the two fastening screws on the centering device and remove the tool.
6. Attach drive plate.

7. Block drive plate. To do this, attach toothed segment 9538/1 to a screw hole in the crankcase so that at least one tooth is in contact with the starter teeth.

8. Tighten the ten new M10 x 22 fastening screws crosswise. Tightening torque: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) + 90°.

9. Release toothed segment 9538/1 .
10. Install transmission.
