Rear Axle Noise (Squeaking)
Vehicle Type:
Cayenne/Cayenne S/Cayenne Turbo
Model Year:
2003 (3) and 2004 (4)
Concerns:
Rear axle noise (squeaking) on rear axle caused by brake pad making contact with brake pad support plate.
Information:
Due to overlapping of tolerances, the lower edge of the inner brake pad touches the brake pad support plate. As a result, there are noises (squeaking) on the rear axle brakes when braking.
As of August 9, 2003 the brake pad support plate has been modified in the area of the brake pad or the caliper. If there is a complaint, a cutout corresponding to the length of the brake pad (Figure 1, arrows) needs to be made on the brake pad support plate on both brakes of the rear axle.
Introduction:
August 9, 2003, as of the VINs shown.
Parts Information
Note Regarding Parts Department Inventory:
All new parts inventory should be of the updated version. Modified parts can only be identified by the stamped production date (Figure 2, calendar clock). The production date must be 03 (= year) 8 (-- month, marked by dot) or later.
Tools
Work Procedure:
Using a straight grinder, create a cutout for the brake pad on the brake pad support plate on both brakes of the rear axle. To do this, the wheel and the brake disc must be removed.
1. Put vehicle on the vehicle hoist, see Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 4, 4 Lifting the vehicle.
2. Remove rear wheel on one side of vehicle, see Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 4, 44 05 19 - Removing and installing wheel.
3. Remove the brake disc, see Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 4, 46 53 19 - Removing and installing rear brake disc.
4. Work on the brake pad support plate.
4.1 Mark the brake pad support plate area to be removed using a scriber according to the dimensions in Figure 3.
Note:
The depth of 3.5 mm +1 corresponds to a width of approximately 4 mm +1, measured from the outer edge of the brake pad support plate.
4.2 Create the cutout on the brake pad support plate.
Caution!
Damage and corrosion to the running gear parts from grinding particles.
> Shield the running gear parts around the area to be worked on - especially the brake caliper.
Caution!
Damage in the wheel housing and to body by flying sparks when working with grinding wheels.
> This task can only be performed using a straight grinder.
> Wear protective safety equipment when grinding.
4.3 Restrict the cutout area with a hacksaw (Figure 3, arrows) and work on the brake pad support plate using a straight grinder.
4.4 De-burr the grinding position with a file and cover with black spray paint.
4.5 Clean off the grinding debris by blowing off grinding debris with an air hose.
5. Install brake disc and mount wheel.
6. Carry out the tasks listed in steps 2 to 5 on the other side of the vehicle.
7. Remove vehicle from the vehicle hoist.
