Alternator: Service and Repair



Removing And Installing Three-phase Generator - Cayenne Turbo (type M48/50)







- Before the three-phase generator can be removed, the battery must be disconnected and the terminal covered.
- Remove right wheel housing liner.
- Remove air-cleaner box.
- Remove underbody sealing for the engine.
- Drain coolant.
- Detach lock mount, move it to the service position.

NOTE: When the engine is being cleaned with high-pressure cleaning equipment, make sure that the high pressure blast is not directed directly onto the three-phase generator (risk of bearing damage).

Removing the three-phase generator
1. Unscrew the three fastening screws for the impact bracket -8- and remove the impact bracket.







2. Unscrew ground lead fastening screw -1- and remove ground lead.







3. Unclip lead to oil pressure switch and to oil-level sensor using a release lever -A-.







4. Unclip pressure pipe-arrow B-.
5. Release plug on the oil pressure switch and pull it off-arrow C-.
6. Unscrew fastening screw -2-.







7. Seal the coolant hoses -A- and -B- with a hose clamp to prevent them from leaking.







8. Unscrew fastening screws -3- and -4- on the coolant connections.







9. Unscrew fastening screws -5- and -6- and support the three-phase generator with your hand.







10. Pull out generator to the front -arrow A-.







11. Pull off the protective cap for the electrical plug connection from the mounting point on the generator.







12. Release plug-arrow B- and pull it off -arrow C-.

NOTE: If the protective cap cannot be removed, use a knife to carefully cut if off the generator. Make sure that the plug connection and the electrical lead are not damaged and that the protective cap is only damaged slightly.

13. Unscrew fastening nut -7- and remove B+ lead.







14. Remove the three-phase generator through the opening - wheel housing liner of the removed air-cleaner box.

Installing the three-phase generator
1. Insert the three-phase generator through the opening
- wheel housing liner of the removed air-cleaner box
- and position it on the engine.
2. Tighten electrical B+ lead with fastening nut -7-. To do this, pull the generator forward and position it so it cannot move when the B+ lead is tightened.







NOTE: When tightening the B+ lead, make sure that no leads are trapped between the generator and the engine.

3. Insert plug into the generator -arrow- until it clicks into place.







4. Position the protective cover and press into place. Ensure that it fits securely and is sealed against moisture.







5. Move generator into the fastening position.







6. Position fastening screws according to the sequence shown in -6- and -5-.
7. Tighten fastening screws according to the sequence shown in -6- and -5-.
8. Screw down the holder and the generator leads on the generator using the fastening screw -2-.







9. Clip in lead to oil pressure switch and oil-level sensor -arrow A-.







10. Clip in pressure pipe-arrow B-.
11. Insert plug into the oil pressure switch until it clicks into place-arrow C-.
12. Push in coolant connections on the three-phase generator and screw into place using fastening screws -3- and -4-.







13. Remove hose clamps on the coolant hoses.
14. Secure the ground lead to the generator with the fastening screw -1-.







15. Install drive belt on generator.
16. Position the impact bracket and screw into place with the fastening screws -8-.
- Top up coolant.
- Secure lock mount.
- Install right air-cleaner box.
- Install the right wheel housing liner.
- Connect the battery and carry out the work instructions.
- Install underbody sealing for the engine.







Tightening torques
