Installing Hood Covering

Preparing convertible-top frame and convertible-top covering







INFORMATION: Always replace the spare parts contained in the "convertible-top covering" scope of parts.

1. All pins and screw joints must be checked for tightness before the convertible-top covering is installed. Refer to Replacing convertible-top frame.
2. Measure the centre between the restraining straps and mark it on the tension bow.
3. Replace the tension strap. Refer to Replacing convertible-top frame.
4. Pull clamping rail -3- into the pull strip -1- of the convertible top covering -2- in direction of arrow.







5. Slide clamping rail -3- through to the inside. Position fastening screw -4- on convertible top covering -2- and screw in by hand by approx. 4 turns.
6. Pull slide -1- into the pull strip -2- of the convertible top covering in direction of arrow.







Installing convertible-top covering







INFORMATION: Make sure that the side of the shaped sheetmetal part does not scratch the styling edge.

1. Lay convertible top covering on the convertible top frame.







2. Lay fold placer -2- over the push rod -3-, position on convertible top frame and tighten with the fastening screw -1-. Tightening torque: 1.8 Nm (1.5 ftlb.)

Fastening the convertible-top covering at the sides of the roof frame







1. Lay the convertible-top covering -2- to the front and guide the shaped sheetmetal part into the roof frame from above.







2. Fasten the convertible-top covering -2- with the fastening screws -1-, starting from the front bottom side of the roof frame. Tightening torque : 3.5 Nm (2.5 ftlb.)

Fastening convertible-top covering at front







A self-adhesive strip is affixed to the front of the convertible top covering.

INFORMATION: There must be no bubbles, especially in the area of the lap seam. If necessary, re-tighten convertible top covering with pliers.

1. Pull the protective paper off the adhesive tape and fold the convertible-top covering around the roof frame into the groove without wrinkles.







2. Fix convertible top covering at front with clamps.

Installing seal for convertible-top tip







The seal for the convertible-top tip on the roof frame is in two parts.

1. Remove protective film and fit additional seal -4- flush with the roof frame.







INFORMATION: Make sure the additional seal is clamped under the retaining strip.

2. Insert seal for convertible top tip -3- into roof frame at front corners, position retaining strip -2- on the side of the roof frame and tighten with the fastening screws -1-. Tightening torque: 2.8 Nm (2.0 ftlb.)







INFORMATION: Seal for convertible-top tip must not protrude downwards in the corner area. Make sure it is positioned correctly.

3. Screw down seal for convertible-top tip at the front corners with fastening screws -3-. Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm (2.5ftlb.)
4. Press lower seal -1- into profile of retaining strip -2-.

Installing cover strip







INFORMATION: Seal for convertible-top tip must not be trapped. There must be no gap between seal and covering, and the seal with the covering must run evenly. If necessary, pull the seal up and out and tap it in again.

1. Position cover strip -2- on roof frame -3- and screw down with the fastening screws -1-. Tightening torque : 3.5 Nm (2.5 ftlb.)







Fastening the slide







1. Pull cord -3- from below through the loop on the convertible top covering -Arrow B-. Engage cord with knot on slide -2- -Arrow A-.







INFORMATION: Make sure that the cord is routed above the pin of the main folding top bow.

2. Position slide -2- over leaf spring -Arrow C- and clip onto the main folding top bow. Drive in expanding pin of expansion rivet -1- -Arrow D-.

Loosening convertible top mechanism







INFORMATION:
- Two persons are needed to disengage and engage the convertible top mechanism.
- Two persons are needed to disengage and engage the convertible top mechanism.

1. Press ball socket of push rod -6- off the ball head of the main folding top bow.







2. Carefully remove convertible top by hand to the rear.

Fastening tension cable of the convertible-top covering







INFORMATION: For reasons of space, the front fastening screws of the clamping rail have to be carefully tightened with zero torque using assembly tool with T25 insert 9744.

1. Place tension bow -2- level with the clamping rail guide -3- and tighten the centre fastening screw -1- using assembly tool with T25 insert 9744 on the main folding top bow. Tightening torque: 5 Nm (3.5 ftlb.)







INFORMATION: For reasons of space, the front fastening screws of the clamping rail have to be carefully tightened with zero torque using assembly tool with T25 insert 9744.

2. Insert fastening screw -1- into the tension cable eyelet and guide in the convertible top covering. Tighten fastening screw. Tightening torque: 5 Nm (3.5 ftlb.)
3. Carefully tip convertible top forward by hand until the convertible top frame touches the windscreen frame.
4. Secure clamping rail -2- at the rear with the fastening screw -1-. Tightening torque: 5 Nm (3.5 ftlb.)







Fastening convertible top mechanism







INFORMATION:
- Two persons are needed to disengage and engage the convertible top mechanism.
- Two persons are needed to disengage and engage the convertible top mechanism.

1. Move convertible top to its original position and press ball socket of push rod -6- onto ball head of main folding top bow.







Fastening convertible-top covering on the tension bow







1. Position convertible top covering -1-, with the centre coinciding with the marking on the tension bow -inset-, in the groove of the tension bow -3-. Use a plastic wedge -4- to press in from the centre outwards.







2. After pressing the convertible top covering -1- into the tension bow -3-, check the centre position once more and correct if necessary.

Fastening convertible-top covering on the inside







1. Close convertible top.
2. Stretch convertible top covering -2- and fasten Velcro fastener -1- in groove at rear of roof frame.







3. Pull inlet aid -3A- inwards and, at dimension -X= 85 mm-, tighten the fastening screw -1- with washer -2-. Tightening torque : 2.8 Nm (2.0 ftlb.)







4. Position tightening strip -3B- with the fourth full slit of the seam in the hole on the main folding top bow and tighten the fastening screw -1- with washer -2-. Tightening bow: 1.8 Nm (1.5 ftlb.)

INFORMATION: Make sure that the folding aid is routed under the corner bow.

5. Pull folding aid -2- forwards. Rivet folding aid -2- with rivet -1- and washer -3- to convertible top support.







Fastening hood covering on the inside







1. Close the hood.
2. Tighten the hood covering -2- and secure the Velcro fastener -1- in the groove on the rear roof frame.







3. Pull fitting aid -3A- inwards and when the dimension -X= 85 mm- is reached, screw in the fastening screw -1- and washer -2-. Tightening torque: 2.8 Nm (2 ftlb.)







4. Position tightening strip -3B- with the fourth complete slit from the seam into the hole on the main folding top bow and screw in the fastening screw -1- and washer -2-. Tightening torque: 1.8 Nm (1.5 ftlb.)

INFORMATION:
- Only for vehicles as of March 2008 or vehicles with the new hood covering.
- Make sure that the folding aid is routed under the corner bow.

5. Pull folding aid -2- to the front and guide it through the hood support -arrow-.







6. Rivet the folding aid -2- to the hood support at the side with rivets -1-.

Connecting electric plug connection for rear window







NOTE: Electric plug connection for rear window not disconnected or connected correctly.
- Connector can break or become detached
- Carefully pull off and connect plug coupling.

1. Carefully connect plug coupling -2- at the left and right to the rear window connector -1-.







Installing rear seal (tension bow)







1. Position rear seal (tension bow) -1- on one side of tension bow -2- and tap gently into place with a plastic hammer.







Subsequent work

1. Install roof liner. Refer to Removing and installing roof liner.
2. Install right and left side trim panels. Refer to Removing and installing side trim panel.
3. Install seal for convertible-top compartment lid. Refer to Removing and installing seal for lid.

Subsequent work

INFORMATION: Only for vehicles as of March 2008 or vehicles with the new hood covering.

1. Install roof liner. Refer to Removing and installing roof liner.
2. Install the hood. Refer to Removing and installing hood.
