Removing and Installing Double Sealing Ring

Preliminary work

Preliminary work
1. Raise the vehicle at the prescribed jacking points.
2. Remove rear right wheel.
3. Remove support plate.
4. Unscrew fastening nuts for restraining cables and remove restraining cables from crossmember.
5. Retaining device P 9624/1 must then be screwed to crossmember, then turn spindle upwards and support engine.

6. Drain oil for final drive.
7. Remove the differential.

Information: The adjusting shim is calibrated and cannot be exchanged for a different shim.

1. Remove outer bearing ring -1- and adjusting shim -2- from the transmission housing by hand.

Information: Hook VW 681 must be fitted behind both sealing lips of the sealing ring because fitting it on the outer circumference of the sealing ring can damage the contact surface in the transmission housing. Guide the tool carefully while pulling out.

2. Carefully pull out sealing ring with hook VW 681.

Installing double sealing ring
1. Check seat of sealing ring in transmission housing for damage.
2. Thinly coat outer circumference and sealing lips of sealing ring with Vaseline.
3. Push double sealing ring on so that the projecting sealing lip is pointing towards the pressure piece 3383.

4. Drive double sealing ring into the transmission housing up to the stop with pressure piece 3383.

Subsequent work
1. Install differential.
2. Top up oil for final drive and perform all assembly work described.
3. Retaining device P 9624/1 must then be removed from crossmember.

4. Fit restraining cables to crossmember.





5. Install support plate.
6. Install right wheel.
7. Lower the vehicle.
