G8.5 - Painting Carbon-Fiber Components

G 8.5 Painting Carbon-Fiber Components

Due to the properties of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components, certain exterior influences may result in the texture showing through the painted surface (top paint coat).

This material behavior is caused by high surface temperatures and exposure to UV rays (sunlight). In addition to the previously named conditions, high humidity also contributes to this effect.

This behavior is not considered a defect, but is a material-specific characteristic.

This effect may vary depending on the exterior color and the angle of view.

Over a wide range of temperatures, this behavior will not be present due to the materials used. There is another range in which the material surface texture will become visible through the paint finish. This will disappear once the environmental conditions have changed.

If this extremely high range is exceeded, areas in which the material surface texture is visible through the paint surface may remain.

A special UV-resistant clear coat system is used for the carbon-fiber look components to prevent the surface from ageing and yellowing due to UV rays.

G 8.5.1.2 Phase II - Primer

Step 1: Prime areas sanded through to bare material with 801-72 VOC

Step 2: Fill with Glasurit(R) HS VOC Primer Filler 285-51 VOC (or 285-60 VOC, 285-95 VOC)

G 8.5.1.4 Phase IV - Clear lacquer finish

G 8.5.2 Painting carbon-fiber look components

When painting carbon-fiber look components, the base material, which is usually a type of carbon-fiber fabric, is painted with several layers of clear lacquer. The texture is visible as a result, which contributes to a very striking and high-quality appearance.

New parts are always supplied completely painted.

The repair possibilities for these components are limited to painting the surface with clear lacquer.

NOTE: If larger scrapes are to be repaired, it may be necessary to apply the clear lacquer in several coats while sanding and allowing each to dry.
