Removal and Replacement


Removing and mounting automatic transmission

Information
When installing a new or replacement transmission, the adaptation values must be reset with the PIWIS Tester 97180. The shifting quality can be affected during the adaptation phase of the transmission control module.

Preliminary work

Remove engine-transmission unit.

Remove the starter.

Removing automatic transmission

Dismantling

1. Disengage B+ wire on bracket.
2. Pull off vacuum line for flat-seat valve on branch piece.
3. Disconnect coolant supply hose on pipe.

4. Disengage coolant hoses from support.

5. Remove crash support.

6. Remove drive belt.

Releasing torque converter

1. Rotate engine to TDC mark.

2. Unscrew two converter fastening screws through the starter opening.

3. Turn the engine a further 120° clockwise.
4. Unscrew two converter fastening screws through the starter opening.

5. Turn the engine a further 120° clockwise.
6. Unscrew two converter fastening screws through the starter opening.

Removing the automatic transmission

1. Unscrew the two upper fastening screws on the converter bell housing and suspend the transmission from the workshop crane using a holder P 9674.

2. Unscrew the remaining fastening screws and pull the transmission out until a locating pin P 9595 can be inserted for holding the converter.

3. Remove transmission together with converter.

Refitting transmission

1. Check installation depth of the converter using a depth gauge. The installation depth must be approx. 15 mm.

2. Additional support P 9111/6 must be inserted all the way into the engine retainer plate.

3. Push converter into the transmission until the locating pin P 9595 touches the toothed ring on the flywheel.
4. Locating pin P 9595 must then be removed.
5. Push the transmission all the way in and bolt it to the intermediate housing using four fastening screws.





6. Place a wooden support from the spacer P 9111/4 to the additional support P 9111/6, position additional support P 9111/6 and lower the transmission.
7. Holder P 9674 must then be removed and remaining fastening screws screwed in.





Securing torque converter

1. Rotate engine to TDC mark.

2. Screw in two converter fastening screws through the starter opening.

3. Turn the engine a further 120° clockwise.
4. Screw in two converter fastening screws through the starter opening.

6. Screw in two converter fastening screws through the starter opening.

Assembly work

1. Guide in drive belt.

2. Fit crash support.

3. Engage coolant hoses in support.

4. Fit coolant supply hose with spring band clamp.

5. Attach vacuum line for flat-seat valve on branch piece.
6. Engage B+ wire on bracket.

Subsequent work

Reworking

Install the starter.

Install engine-transmission unit.
