Torque Converter: Service and Repair


Removing and installing torque converter





Preliminary work

1. Remove transmission.
2. Put transmission in horizontal position.

1. Locating pin 95951 (long) must be removed from the transmission housing.

Information
When pulling out, the torque converter must be kept horizontal, otherwise ATF can emerge.

2. Screw two screws (M8) into torque converter and remove torque converter using the screws from the transmission input shaft.

Information
Before installing the torque converter, check the hub for scoring. If damaged, the converter must be replaced.

1. Move torque converter up to stop on the transmission input shaft.

Torque converter installed at the wrong position during fitting
^ Risk of damage to ATF pump


-> Check that the torque converter is installed at the correct position.

-> Check installation position of torque converter.

2. Press torque converter by hand into the converter bell housing and turn until the cut-out of the converter hub clicks into place in the driver of the impeller. The converter must slip inwards until it makes a noise.
3. Check installation depth of the converter using a depth gauge. The installation depth must be approx. 15 mm.

If the locating pins 95951 (long) cannot be inserted as shown, check the torque converter again to ensure that the installation position is correct.

4. Fix torque converter into installation position with locating pin 95951 (long).

Subsequent work

1. Mount transmission.
2. After reinstalling the engine-transmission unit, the ATF level must be checked, and topped up as required.
