Removing And Installing Oxygen Sensor Behind Catalytic Converter On DFI Engines

Tools

Technical values

Preliminary work

CAUTION: Danger of burns from hot exhaust system.

- Only remove the exhaust system once it has cooled down.
- Wear protective gloves.

1. Move bonnet to service position using lid prop 9704.
2. Put on the protection covers.
3. Remove right engine compartment cover.

INFORMATION

Component overview

Removing oxygen sensor behind catalytic converter

CAUTION:
Material damage can be caused by interchanged oxygen sensors.
- Change in emissions.
- Check Engine light comes on.

- Do not confuse oxygen sensors.
- Check correct assignment of oxygen sensors using the PIWIS Tester.

CAUTION:
The oxygen sensor cable can be damaged if twisted.
- Change in emissions.
- Check Engine light comes on.

- Always expose oxygen sensor cable so that the wire can turn when unscrewing or screwing in the sensor.
- Do not kink cable.

1. Disconnect cable plugs on the oxygen sensors behind the catalytic converter and expose cables. To do this, trace cable routing to the oxygen sensors behind the catalytic converter and disconnect the corresponding cable plugs. - Cable plugs for oxygen sensors

2. Remove oxygen sensors behind the catalytic converter. -2-. - Detaching oxygen sensor using open-ended wrench (oxygen sensor behind catalytic converter for cylinders 1 to 3 shown) Unscrew both oxygen sensors behind the catalytic converter using a ring or open-ended wrench (a/f 22) or using open-end/ring wrench Nr.96-3 or open-end/ring wrench Nr.98.

1. Install oxygen sensors. To do this, grease thread of oxygen sensors with Optimoly Paste MF (000 043 207 07) before fitting them. Make sure that the paste does not get into the slits in the sensor body. Screw in both oxygen sensors behind catalytic converter -2- using a ring or open-ended wrench (a/f 22) or using open-end/ring wrench Nr.96-3 or open-end/ring wrench Nr.98. - Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ftlb.)

2. Connect oxygen sensors. Route cable for the oxygen sensors, clip it in and connect cable plugs for the oxygen sensors behind catalytic converter.

Subsequent work
1. Fit engine compartment cover.
2. Secure the bonnet.
