Use of the mechanical vacuum pump permits an emission reducing strategy for complying with the more stringent emission regulations. The Cayman S engine employs a mechanical vacuum pump instead of a conventional vacuum amplifier to provide the vacuum for the brake booster and for activation of the switching elements on the engine and gearbox side (e.g. the tuning flap and distribution pipe flap of the intake system).
