Eliminating Noise Symptoms - Reworking Cabriolet Hood (Creaking Noise From Hood/Hardtop)

General information

Symptoms

Creaking noises from around the hood when using the wind deflector or operating the hardtop.

Causes and remedial action

Creaking noises can be heard while driving if parts of the hood are not greased.

Materials







Reworking Cabriolet hood

Overview

If a customer complains of creaking noises from around the Cabriolet hood, work through the sections listed below:
- Section on "Lubricating hood".
- Section on "Lubricating hood compartment lid".
- Section on "Lubricating wind deflector".

If a customer complains of creaking noises during hardtop operation from around the front hardtop latch, work through the following section:
- Section on "Reworking gate guide in latching hook of hardtop latch".

Lubricating convertible top

- Refer to Convertible top in service position

1. Lubricate thrust wedge -1- and roof frame fitting -2- on the left and right with Krytox GPL.
Lubricate sealing lip -3- on the tension bow seal by applying Osixo Anti Squeak 557 all the way round.







Lubricating convertible-top compartment lid

- Refer to Convertible top in service position. Refer to Removing and installing trim panel for convertible top rest.

1. Lubricate latching hook -1- on hinge for convertible-top compartment lid at the left and right with Krytox GPL.
Lubricate gate link -2- on hinge for convertible-top compartment lid at the left and right with Castrol Optitemp LG 2.
Lubricate driver -3- on hinge for convertible-top compartment lid at the left and right with Castrol Optitemp LG 2.
Lubricate locking hook -4- with Krytox GPL.







Refer to Removing and installing trim panel for convertible top rest.

Lubricating windstop

1. Carefully press out the locking handle -1- with a screwdriver.
Lubricate locking pins -2- on windstop at the left and right with Krytox GPL.







Reworking gate guide in latching hook of hardtop latch

1. Pull off cover of locking lever for the hardtop latch. Refer to Removing and installing hardtop.

INFORMATION: When the hardtop is installed, Krytox GPL205 grease can drip when greasing the guide. The endangered areas of the instrument panel and centre console must be properly covered with a cloth, for example.

2. Use a (small) paintbrush to coat the sides of the contact area of the guide pin and latching hook with grease -1-.







3. Use a (small) paintbrush to apply grease to the gate of the latching hook -2-.
4. Press the locking lever several times in succession (open and close the front hardtop latch) to distribute the grease around the gate guide.
5. Fit the cover on the locking lever. Refer to Removing and installing hardtop.
