Eliminating Noise Symptoms - Reworking Roof Assembly

General information

Symptoms
Creaking/rattling noises generally from the roof area.

Causes and remedial action
Creaking/rattling noises from the roof area can occur while driving due to relative movements.

In the event of a complaint, the following remedial action must be taken:

Remedial action 1: Replace rubber stops for air deflector slat.
Remedial action 2: Clean and grease contact points of air deflector.
Remedial action 3: Grease guide rails and gate guide on the sides.
Remedial action 4: Replace end rubber stops in the gate links.
Remedial action 5: Replace seal for lower sunroof.
Remedial action 6: Replace seal for upper sunroof.
Remedial action 7: Replace seal for centre joint.

Preliminary work

1. Remove frame for sunroof cover. Refer to Removing and installing frame for sunroof cover.

Reworking roof assembly

INFORMATION: The bonding surfaces must be clean and free of grease.

1. Remedial action 1: Replace rubber stops for air deflector slat.
1.1. Pull off rubber stops -1- (-arrows-) and remove any adhesive residue.







1.2. Stick new rubber stops -1- at -X= 100 mm- to the roof assembly -2- (-arrows-).







2. Remedial action 2: Clean and grease contact points of air deflector.
2.1. Pull off rubber sleeve -1- from the pivot bearing -2- at the left and right -arrow A-.







2.2. Remove circlip -3- at the left and right using a screwdriver -arrow B-.
2.3. Pull air deflector (bolt) -1- halfway out of the pivot bearing -2- (-arrow A-) and spray with FIN Super.







2.4. Press in air deflector (bolt) -1- completely -arrow B-.
2.5. Press circlip -3- into the pivot bearing -2- at the left and right using a screwdriver -arrow A-.







2.6. Press in rubber sleeve -1- at the pivot bearing -2- at the left and right -arrow B-.
2.7. Clean air deflector mechanism -1- and air deflector supports -2- at the left and right.







2.8. Lightly lubricate air deflector mechanism -1- and air deflector supports -2- at the left and right with Krytox.

3. Remedial action 3: Grease guide rails and gate guide on the sides.
3.1. Lubricate guide rails -1- and gate guide -2- at the left and right with FIN Super.







4. Remedial action 4: Replace end rubber stops in the gate links.
4.1. Pull end rubber stops -1- out of the gate links -2- at the left and right using a screwdriver -arrow-.







4.2. Press new end rubber stops -1- into the gate links -2- on the left and right -arrow-.







5. Remedial action 5: Replace seal for lower sunroof.
5.1. Lift seal -1- out of the groove in the frame for the sunroof cover -2- all the way around -arrow-.







5.2. Install seal.







5.2.1. Prime bonding surfaces at the corners of the frame for the sunroof cover -2- with 3M 4297 primer.
5.2.2. Press new seal -1- into the groove in the frame for the sunroof cover -2- all the way around -arrow-.
5.2.3. Pull protective film -3- off the adhesive strips at the corners of the seal -1-. Also apply a few drops of instant adhesive -4- to the corners and press seal -1- on firmly at the corners to secure it to the frame for the sunroof cover -2- (-arrow-).

6. Remedial action 6: Replace seal for upper sunroof.
6.1. Pull seal off the sunroof cover all the way round -arrow-.







6.2. Position new seal all the way round the sunroof cover -arrow-.







7. Remedial action 7: Replace seal for centre joint.
7.1. Pull seal -1- out of the roof assembly frame in -direction of arrow-.







7.2. Pull new seal -1- into the roof assembly frame in -direction of arrow-. The seal -1- must be flush on the left and right.







Subsequent work

1. Install frame for sunroof cover. Refer to Removing and installing frame for sunroof cover.
