Removing and Installing Oxygen Sensors (LS) Behind Catalytic Converter

Removing And Installing Oxygen Sensors (LS) Behind Catalytic Converter

Tools

Technical values

Preliminary work
1. Remove air cleaner housing.

2. Open oxygen sensor connectors in engine compartment.
The sensor connectors and cables are of different colours.

2.1. Open connector on left; to do so pull the two connectors out of the holder and then release them.
Unclip cable -arrow-.

2.2. Open connector on right; to do so pull the two connectors out of the holder and then release them.
Unclip cable -arrows-.

3. Remove rear wheel. Use special tool Socket-wrench insert P300.

WARNING:
Objects or loads falling down
- Risk of squashing or crushing
- Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

4. Support engine with transmission and unit jack Junior Jack 2.0 WE 1223 and GA passenger car transmission plate WE 1224 at the oil pan.
4.1. When positioning pay attention to the oil level sensor.

5. Unscrew two M12 special nuts (inner Torx, screw insert T55) -1- at the engine mounting (hydraulic mount) on the left and right.

INFORMATION: When lowering, the engine must not rest on the rear axle cross member.

6. Carefully lower engine using the transmission jack.

CAUTION:
Hot components
- Risk of burns
- Let hot components cool down.
- Wear personal protective gear.

1. Observe instructions when working with oxygen sensors.

2. Unclip cable for oxygen sensor behind catalytic converter (black) at the mounting points (item 5).

Tool recommendation:

3. Loosen oxygen sensor.

3.1. Connect extension with crow foot wrench -2- and connect to hexagon on sensor -1-. Position torque wrench and loosen sensor.
3.2. Unscrew oxygen sensor by hand.

Installation

Installing oxygen sensor

INFORMATION:
- When reinstalling oxygen sensors, grease the thread with the Optimol Paste MF lubricant (Part No. 000.043.207.07) only.
- New oxygen sensors have already been greased and the thread is fitted with a protection cap.

1. Observe instructions when working with oxygen sensors.
2. During reinstallation of the oxygen sensor, the thread must be coated with the prescribed lubricant.
3. Screw in oxygen sensor by hand and tighten to tightening specification.
- Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ftlb.) ±8 Nm (±6 ftlb.)
4. Route oxygen sensor cable (black) along the engine and secure it at the defined mounting points (see overview diagrams, item 5).

Subsequent work

WARNING:
Objects or loads falling down
- Risk of squashing or crushing
- Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

1. Raise engine into installation position with transmission jack.

2. Position M12 special nut (inner Torx, screw insert T55) -1- and tighten it to the tightening specification.
- Tightening torque: 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)

3. Route oxygen sensor cable in engine compartment and secure in the retaining clips.
3.1. Close plug connections and insert into the holders.

4. Install air cleaner housing.
5. Mount rear wheel.
