Removing and installing long halfshaft flange
Preliminary work
1. Raise the vehicle at the prescribed jacking points.
2. Remove left rear wheel.
Removing long halfshaft flange
Removing long drive shaft flange
1. Remove left drive shaft on the transmission side.
Removing drive shaft
1.1. Unscrew and remove screws -2- on left drive shaft -1-.
1.2. Move drive shaft into position.
Information:
Protect drive shafts against mechanical damage (e.g. with a rubber hose that has been cut open).
2. Remove long halfshaft flange.
Removing long halfshaft flange
2.1. Hold left drive shaft -2- in position with the help of another person.
2.2. Drive out long halfshaft flange -1- using striking tool VW 771/1 -3- and remove carefully.
Installing long halfshaft flange
1. Install long halfshaft flange.
1.1. Check halfshaft flange for burrs and sharp edges on the transmission end of the shaft and deburr if necessary.
Checking halfshaft flange
1.2. Carefully slide halfshaft flange into the transmission and drive it in.
Fit long drive shaft flange and drive into place by tapping lightly with a hammer (rubber hammer).
Information:
To avoid damaging the sealing ring in the transmission, the halfshaft flange must be guided carefully into position by hand.
2. Fit left drive shaft on the transmission side.
Fitting drive shaft
2.1. Screw in and tighten screws -2- on left drive shaft -1-.
- Tightening torque: 81 Nm (60 ftlb.)
Subsequent work
1. Install left rear wheel.
