Removing and installing camshaft housing








Preliminary Work

Caution
Risk of damage due to particles of dirt.
Danger of material damage due to blocked oil bores/oil ducts.

- Absolute cleanliness is essential when working on the engine.
- Lay removed engine parts on a clean base and make sure to cover them.
- Use the cover for dust protection when fitting the engine NR.165 on the engine assembly support.


1. Remove engine.
2. Remove transmission.
3. Secure engine support to the engine/transmission flange with screw sleeves.
4. Secure engine to the assembly support with an engine lift. Get another person to help you do this.
5. Remove rear silencers.
6. Remove cover for camshaft housing.
7. Remove camshafts.

Removing camshaft housing

Caution

Warning
Flat-base tappets confused.
Risk of engine damage

- Do not confuse flat-base tappets.
- The flat-base tappets have been run in in their housing. Therefore, they must not be confused.


1. Remove flat-base tappets.





Example of how to store flat-base tappets

1.1. Prepare a clean surface on which you can write. Note the installation position of the flat-base tappets in the housing.

2. Loosen 18 Torx screws according to specifications and unscrew them.

3. Remove camshaft housing.
3.1. Be careful with the dowel sleeve -1- on the chain case.

4. Take off metal seal for camshaft housing and moulded seal for chain case.
5. Carefully clean the housing and sealing surfaces.

Flat-base tappets confused.
Risk of engine damage

- Do not confuse flat-base tappets.
- The flat-base tappets have been run in in their housing. Therefore, they must not be confused.


1. Fit new seals for camshaft housing. Observe marking.
1.1. Fit new metal seal. Markings must be facing you.
1.1.1. Side 1-3: TOP 1-3/left.
1.1.2. Side 4-6: TOP 4-6/right.
1.2. Fit new moulded seal for chain housing.

2. Place camshaft housing in position.
2.1. Be careful with the dowel sleeve -1- on the chain housing.

3. Screw in 18 Torx screws (M8) evenly and tighten according to the prescribed tightening sequence.
3.1. Pre-tighten screws. - Initial tightening: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)
3.2. Tighten screws to final torque. - Final tightening: 28 Nm (21 ftlb.)

4. Coat fitting bores for tappets with new engine oil.
4.1. Fit bucket and switchable tappets at their original position. Be careful with the feather keys on the switchable tappets -arrow-.

Subsequent Work

1. Install camshafts.
2. Install cover for camshaft housing.
3. Fit rear silencers.
4. Loosen engine on the assembly support with an engine lift and remove lifting platform. Get another person to help you do this.
5. Screw off screw sleeves for the engine support on the engine/transmission flange and remove support.
6. Refit transmission.
7. Install engine.
