WM 600649 Eliminating symptoms on body exterior - Reworking roof assembly (roof assembly creaking/stiff)
Technical values
General information
Symptoms
While driving and when opening/closing the roof elements:
- Creaking or squeaking noises,
- Roof element is stiff/reversed or
Roof element will not open.
Causes and remedial action
Cause
The specified symptoms can occur if the roof assembly needs more grease and if the guide mechanism or roof transverse seals are dirty.
Remedial action
In the event of a complaint, carefully clean and grease the guide mechanism for the roof assembly and the roof transverse seals.
Tools and materials
- Clean paintbrush
- Clean cloth

Reworking roof assembly
Overview of component designations:
-Item 1- => Roof element 1/air deflector
-Item 2- => Roof element 2 (sunroof element)
-Item 3- => Roof element 3 (slide/tilt roof element)
-Item 4- => Roof element 4 (fixed roof element)

Information
Before greasing the seals, edges, guide mechanism and guide rails, clean these areas carefully to remove any dirt and contamination.
The prescribed grease "Polylub GLY 151" MUST be used only for the guide mechanism and the guide rails.
1. Grease guide mechanism and guide rails with "Polylub" grease:
1.1. Open the panorama roof fully (roof element 2 and 3).
1.2. Unclip cover -item 1- by pulling it upwards -arrow-.

1.3. Apply Polylub grease into the track for the air deflector lifting link => Figure 3 using a paintbrush.

1.4. Apply Polylub grease into the lock link for roof element 2 => Figure 4 using a paintbrush.

1.5. Grease guide rail on the air deflector slide -item 1- with "Polylub" grease:
Figure 5
1.5.1. Push air deflector slide forward as far as it will go.
1.5.2. Apply Polylub grease into the guide rail behind the air deflector slide using a paintbrush.
1.5.3. Push air deflector slide back as far as it will go.
1.5.4. Apply Polylub grease into the guide rail in front of the air deflector slide using a paintbrush.
1.5.5. Distribute the grease evenly by moving the air deflector slide several times.
Information
The guide rail for the roll-up sunblind -inset 1- must not be greased. Grease on the guide rail will soil the roll-up sunblind.

1.6.
Apply Polylub grease into the guide rails close to roof element 2 and 3 on the roof assembly frame => Figure 7 using a paintbrush.

2. Grease the edges and transverse seals of the roof elements with "Krytox" using a clean cloth:
Information
Grease the seals and edges of the roof elements only with Krytox and observe the following points while doing so:
- Apply a thin and even coat of Krytox using a clean cloth.
- Processing temperature must be (at least or higher than) => Temperature: +20°C
- Krytox must be left to dry for at least 30 minutes after greasing the seals and edges (and coated surfaces must be visibly dry) before closing the roof elements.
2.1. Open the air deflector until the edge of the air deflector -item 1- is freely accessible.
Figure 11
2.2. Grease the edge of the air deflector -item 1- and the transverse seal for roof element 2 -item 2- with Krytox using a clean cloth.
2.3. Move roof element 3 to "Lift" position => Figure 12.
Figure 12
2.4. Grease the edge of roof element 3 -item 1- and the transverse seal for roof element 4 -item 2- with Krytox using a clean cloth.
2.5. Open roof element 3 fully => Figure 13.
Figure 13
2.6. Grease the edge of roof element 2 -item 1- and the transverse seal for roof element 3 -item 2- with Krytox using a clean cloth.
End of remedial action.
