Engine Oil Control Valve: Service and Repair

Removing and installing oil pressure control valve

Preliminary work

Information
If vehicles have fault entries relating to oil pressure, oil pump activation, oil pressure monitoring, etc. in the DME control unit (and a warning light comes "on" on the instrument cluster), proceed as follows:
* Check the oil level.
* Delete related faults.
* Do not replace components, such as the oil pump, oil pressure sensor or oil pressure control valve if you suspect that they are faulty.

If the vehicle has not been driven for a long time (months), the control mechanism in the oil pump can become stiff ("stick").

Very short trips and a lot of loading/maneuvering can cause the oil to become very diluted => Oil pressure very low. For example, 20 cold starts in quick succession can reduce the viscosity of the engine oil by 30%.

* Change the engine oil. Test-drive the vehicle.
* If error messages/warnings are displayed again, proceed in accordance with the instructions under Guided Fault Finding in the PIWIS Tester.

1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove front underbody panelling.
3. Drain engine oil.

Information

Component overview

Information
The oil pressure control valve is located on the right side of the oil guide housing, at the front next to the oil filter.

Installation position

2 - Engine oil filter
3 - Generator
4 - Oil pan

Oil guide housing with accessories

1 - Screw, M6 x 20
2 - Sealing flange
3 - Sealing ring
4 - Oil guide housing to lower part of crankcase - aluminum screw; replace aluminum screws
5 - Oil level sensor
6 - Oil level sensor to oil guide housing (steel screw)
7 - Timing-case cover to oil guide housing - aluminum screw; always replace aluminum screws

Oil pump

1 - Oil pump
2 - Screw, M8 x 22; replace
3 - Oil pump sprocket
4 - Cap screw, M36
5 - Solenoid valve (oil pressure control valve)
6 - Sealing rings (grease before fitting)
7 - Dowel sleeve
8 - Screw, M6 x 45
9 - Sprocket cover
10 - Screw, M6 x 16
11 - Drive chain

Oil pressure control valve and tool

1 - Screw, M6 x 20
2 - Joint flange with sealing ring
3 - Cap screw, M36
4 - Oil sealing ring with engine oil
5 - Solenoid valve/oil pressure control valve
6 - Special socket socket-wrench insert 9753
7 - Puller relay puller 9235

Removing oil pressure control valve

1. Loosen retaining clip -1-.

Pulling off connector

2. Release connector -2- and pull it off.
3. Set connector -1- and cable aside and secure if necessary.
4. Unscrew fastening screws -3-.
5. Pull out the flange -1-.

Pulling out flange

6. Unscrew cap screw on the oil pressure control valve using a socket-wrench insert 9753.

Using special socket

7. Grip oil pressure control valve with a relay puller 9235 and turn carefully to remove it.

Installing oil pressure control valve

Information
The tightening specifications for the basic engine are stored centrally. Tightening torques and assembly instructions for other affected assemblies (e.g. chassis, electrics, transmission or body) or for peripheral engine equipment can be found in the corresponding documents.

Information
* All O-rings must be replaced with new ones when re-installing the oil pressure control valve.
* Coat the O-rings with Vaseline or engine oil before installing the oil pressure control valve.
* Check the position of the bore hole compared with the nipple when positioning the flange.

1. The oil pressure control valve is installed in reverse order to removal.

Subsequent work

1. Install front underbody panelling.
2. Fill in engine oil.
