Removing rear pneumatic spring

Removing rear gas spring at the lid

CAUTION

When working on the rear gas springs, the following safety measures, for example, must be observed:

-> To remove the rear gas springs, it is important that they are not in use, i.e. the rear window cover must be open.
-> The rear window cover must be secured against inadvertent closure after removing the rear gas springs.
-> The rear gas springs must not be forced open because of their very high internal pressure.





Installation position of rear gas spring

1. Open the rear lid.

2. A second person should hold the rear lid to prevent it from closing accidentally.
3. Pull connector for rear window heating -1- off the rear gas spring -2- ( -Arrow A- ).
4. Insert a screwdriver between the head of the rear gas spring -2- and the safety clip -3-.
5. Loosen the safety clip -3- by levering the screwdriver up and down -Arrow B-. The safety clip remains on the head of the rear gas spring.
6. Pull the rear gas spring -2- off the ball head -Arrow B-.

CAUTION

NOTICE

Replacing a single rear gas spring

- Rear lid can become very distorted

-> Always replace both rear gas springs at the same time.

1. A second person must hold the rear lid to prevent it from closing accidentally.





Engaging rear gas spring at the body

2. Press the rear gas spring -2- onto the ball head -Arrow A- until the rear gas spring -2- locks with an audible click.
3. Check that the safety clip -3- has engaged correctly. Repeat the procedure if necessary.
4. Fit connector for rear window -1- onto the rear gas spring -2- ( -Arrow B- ).
5. Check that the rear gas springs are working correctly. -> 649519 Removing and installing rear gas springs - section on "Checking"

NOTICE

Replacing a single rear gas spring

- Rear lid can become very distorted

-> Always replace both rear gas springs at the same time.

Checking operation of rear gas springs

1. Close and open the rear lid several times to check that the rear gas springs are working properly and were fitted correctly.
2. Open the rear lid fully. The rear gas spring must hold the rear lid in its open position.
3. Close the rear lid.
