Checking engine oil pressure

Information

Specifications for wrench sizes (a/f specifications) for screw heads are described as follows:

- Torx screws: (E.) for external Torx, (T.) for internal Torx.

- Hexagon-head bolts (internal and external hexagon): Wrench size (a/f)

Information

- Carry out the oil pressure test on cylinder bank 4-6 because it is easier to reach.

Installation position of threaded plug -1- :

CAUTION

Hot components

- Risk of burns

-> Let hot components cool down.
-> Wear personal protective gear.

1. Unscrew aluminium threaded plug (M14 x 1.5) -1- on the cylinder head.

Tool: 3/8-inch socket-wrench insert (long), hexagon socket a/f 5 -2-.

Using tool on threaded plug

1.1. Replace sealing ring.
2. Feed a piece of welding wire -1- through the 3/8-inch socket-wrench insert (a/f 19) -2- and adapter No. 19 (a/f 19) -3-.
2.1. Seal it using the old sealing ring -4- for the threaded plug.
2.2. Due to restricted access, the welding wire makes it easier to fit the adapter.

Preparing tool for fitting adapter

3. Position the adapter on the test connection with the welding wire.
4. Screw adapter -1- with the sealing ring into the threaded bore for the oil-pressure sender.
4.1. Attach connection line -2- of the test pressure gauge to the adapter.

5. PIWIS Tester 9718 must be connected to the vehicle. Select Oil temperature in the actual values.

Information

- An engine oil temperature of at least 90° Celsius is required in order to check the oil pressure correctly.

- The following tools are approved for checking engine oil pressure.

- Oil Pressure Tester V.A.G 1342 WE 1068

- Oil Pressure Tester OP 85 WE 1276 , Leitenberger (recommended)

6. Start the engine and let it heat up until the engine oil temperature is at least 90° Celsius.
6.1. Read off the oil temperature on the PIWIS Tester.
7. Rev to the prescribed test speed and read off the oil pressure on the pressure gauge -3-.

8. Remove test tools.
8.1. Wrap a clean cloth around the test connection on the cylinder head to absorb drops of oil.
9. Fit threaded plug (M14 x 1.5) with a new sealing ring.
