Manual Transmission - G97.55

The MY 2010 911 Turbo is available as standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and optionally with a 7-speed double-clutch transmission (Porsche Doppelkupplung). Like its predecessor, it is also always a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The torque supplied to the front axle is controlled here by the familiar Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system.

General Information

Changes compared with the previous transmission:

- Housing with reinforcements and modified clutch flange
- Bevel crown wheel with higher power transmission potential
- Dual-mass flywheel with reinforced spring assembly
- Clutch with higher engagement force
- Shift indicator

Clutch/Clutch Actuation

The whole clutch assembly was revamped due to the higher engine torque that has to be transmitted. The spring assembly of the dual-mass flywheel was reinforced and the engagement force of the clutch was increased. The hydraulic clutch actuation system compensates for the higher engagement force with no change in the force required to operate the clutch pedal. The hydraulic assistance for clutch actuation not only ensures low pedal forces in the new 911 Turbo, but also constant pedal forces for the entire life of the clutch.

Transmission Modifications

In order to reliably transmit the higher power and torque values, some of the power transmission elements have been modified in the 911 Turbo. The design of the bevel crown wheel was modified in order to increase the transmittable forces. The transmission housing and clutch flange were reinforced. These modifications increase the component strength. This was necessary due to the higher transmission loads and geometrical adaptations of the final drive.

The 3rd to 6th gears feature a double carbon synchronizer, whereby the use of carbon improves load capacity and shift comfort. The modifications are supplemented with reinforced drive shafts at the rear axle.

Shift Indicator

A shift indicator in the instrument cluster is used for the first time in the new 911 Turbo with manual transmission in order to reduce fuel consumption. Similar to the current 911 Carrera models, upshift indication occurs depending on the selected gear, engine speed and accelerator-pedal position. Illumination of this indicator prompts the driver to shift to the next-higher gear in order to reduce fuel consumption. The driver is prompted to perform an upshift only if the previously selected speed and acceleration can be continued in the next-higher gear. The actual display is shown in the rev counter in the area of the on-board computer in the form of a triangle to the right of the digital speed display.
