Information
- Protect the drive shafts from mechanical damage.
1. Loosen the drive shaft at the wheel hub. To do this, get another mechanic to help by operating the brake.
1.1. Procedure (for loosening the drive shaft at the wheel hub) on vehicles with central bolts:
1.1.1. Remove the lockable wheel bolt (locking mechanism).
Lockable wheel bolt (locking mechanism)
1.1.2. Loosen/remove the hexagon nut -1- using socket wrench 9471.
Wheel hub on central bolts
2. Carefully press the drive shaft peg out of the wheel hub until you can move the shaft with your hand.
2.1. On vehicles without central bolts, use Universal drive shaft/wheel hub extractor as of `86 model Nr.87-1.
Pressing out drive shaft
2.2. On vehicles with central bolts , screw assembly aid 9794 (hub extension) -1- (as far as it can go) into the wheel hub. The spindle -2- must not yet touch the drive shaft. Turn the spindle -2- as required if necessary.
Central bolts: pressing out drive shaft (illustration shows rear wheel hub)
Turn the spindle -2- to the right. Counter at the surface -3- with an open-ended wrench (a/f 36 mm) while doing this.
Keep turning the spindle -2- until the drive shaft is pressed out of the wheel hub.
3. Remove front drive shaft on transmission side. To do this, unscrew the six hexagon socket head bolts between the drive shaft and transmission flange. Hold the wheel securely to prevent it from turning as well (press on the wheel to do this).
Drive shaft
4. Carefully pull out the drive shaft. Do not damage the drive shaft and adjacent components.
If the drive shaft cannot be removed for tolerance reasons (limited space in the area), loosen the front-axle drive (front-axle final drive) and move it to the right or left as required (next step/not generally required).
5. If necessary (if the drive shaft cannot be removed), loosen the front-axle drive (front-axle final drive) and move it to the right or left as required. Do not use force!
First, support the front-axle drive (front-axle final drive) using a suitable jack.
Loosen fastening nuts -B- for the front carrier -A- and unscrew the studs -C-.
Mounting for final drive
Installing front drive shaft
Use Optimoly HT to lightly grease the drive shaft thread and toothing.
1. Carefully guide in the drive shaft from below. Do not damage the drive shaft and adjacent components.
2. Fit the front-axle drive (front-axle final drive) if necessary (if it was loosened in order to remove the drive shaft).
2.1. Screw studs -C- through the transmission support -A- and into the front-axle cross member.
Final drive mount
=> Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)
2.2. Screw fastening nuts -B- onto the studs and tighten them.
=> Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)
2.3. Remove jack (used for support).
3. Fit front drive shaft on transmission side. To do this, screw in the six hexagon socket head bolts between the drive shaft and transmission flange and tighten the bolts. Counter at the wheel to prevent it from turning as well.
=> Tightening torque: 39 Nm (29 ftlb.)
Drive shaft
4. Secure the drive shafts at the wheel hub. Use a new lock nut.
When tightening, get another mechanic to help by operating the brake.
=> Tightening torque: 460 Nm (340 ftlb.)
Subsequent work
1. Install front cover.
=> Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)

2. Install diagonal braces.
=> Tightening torque: 100 Nm (74 ftlb.)

3. Fit underbody panelling => 519219 Removing and installing front cover.
4. On vehicles with central bolts, check the lockable wheel bolt (locking mechanism) and wheel bolt for damage. Then, insert the lockable wheel bolt into the wheel hub.
4.1. Check that the toothed locking pin is not stiff. After pressing the pin into its cartridge, it must return to its original position with force and without catching.
Lockable wheel bolt (locking mechanism)
Replace the lockable wheel bolt(s) if they are damaged or if you have any doubts.
The toothing on the locking pin must not be damaged.
4.2. Check the wheel bolt for damage. There must be no scratches or cracks on the conical area, trapezoidal thread and inner toothing on the bolt. Replace the wheel bolt if it is damaged or if you have any doubts.
Before screwing on the wheel bolt, check that the lockable wheel bolt (locking mechanism) is engaged (the locking mechanism must be in the wheel hub).
Wheel bolt (central bolt)
5. Fit the relevant front wheel.

=> 440519 Removing and installing wheel with central bolt.
6. Lower the vehicle.
