WM 373025 Eliminating symptoms - Engine: Re-programming PDK control unit (I-no. 250) (Engine speed falls when stopping at idle speed - engine cuts out/SY3210)

Tools

General information

Symptom

Vehicles with Porsche Double Clutch (PDK), I-no. 250:
When stopping the vehicle in 3rd gear or in a higher gear, engine speed can fall below idling speed and the engine can cut out in some cases.

Cause, date of introduction and remedial action

Cause

A software error in the PDK control unit can cause the engine speed to fall.

Date of introduction

Updated software for the PDK control unit has been used in production since 27.08.2010.

Remedial action

Re-program the PDK control unit and then adapt the engine torque loss.

Tools and materials

- PIWIS Tester 9718 with test software version 29.000 (or higher) installed
- Battery charger (charging current of at least 40 A)

Re-programming PDK control unit

NOTICE

Fault entry in the fault memory and control unit programming aborted due to undervoltage.

- Increased current draw during diagnosis or control unit programming can cause a drop in voltage, which can result in one or more fault entries and the abnormal termination of the programming process.

-> Before starting control unit programming, connect a suitable battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A to the vehicle battery.

1. Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A to the vehicle.
2. Connect PIWIS Tester to the vehicle.
3. Switch on ignition.
4. Re-program the PDK control unit using the PIWIS Tester with test software version 29.000 (or higher) installed.
4.1. Select control unit => 'PDK/Tiptronic' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
4.2. Select menu item => 'Control unit programming' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
4.3. Read and follow the programming instructions on the PIWIS Tester.
Then press >> to continue.
4.4. Select the vehicle type and confirm by pressing >>.
The selected vehicle type appears in the PIWIS Tester display.
4.5. Press F8 to start programming the PDK control unit.
The message "Writing data" will be displayed. A total of three data blocks will be written. A progress bar appears showing the progress of the programming procedure for each data block. Do not interrupt programming.

Information

If programming is interrupted (e.g. due to a voltage drop or if communication is aborted, etc.), programming must be repeated.

4.6. When programming is complete, the message "Programming was completed successfully" will be displayed.
Press >> to continue.
Press >> to confirm the message on the PIWIS Tester instructing you to erase the CAN communication errors entered in some control units by control unit programming.
4.7. Press << to return to the 'Control units' menu (list of control units).
5. Read out the fault memory and erase it.
5.1. Select 'Special functions' in the => 'Control units' menu and confirm by pressing >>.
5.2. Select 'Erase all fault memories' in the menu => '911 (997) special functions function selection' and confirm by pressing >>.
The faults stored in the fault memories of the various control units are deleted.
If the fault memories of individual control units (e.g. DME, PDK) cannot be erased, switch the ignition off and then on again and erase the fault memories of these control units separately.
If other control units are found to have faults, which cannot be erased and are not caused by PDK and DME (DFI) control unit programming, these faults must be located and corrected.
5.3. Once you have erased the fault memories, press << to return to the menu 'Control units' (list of control units).

WARNING

Toxic exhaust gases

- Risk of suffocation

-> Before starting the engine, position an exhaust extraction system behind the vehicle's exhaust pipes and switch it on.

6. Perform engine torque loss adaptation.
Conditions/procedure for engine torque loss adaptation:
6.1. Engine temperature is at least 80 °Celsius.
6.2. Steering wheel is in straight-ahead position.
6.3. All loads are switched off.
6.4. PDK selector lever is in position "P".
6.5. Leave engine running at idle speed with air conditioning switched off for 3 minutes.
6.6. Then allow engine to run at idle speed for 3 minutes with air conditioning switched on (high load).
6.7. Press the foot brake and keep it pressed!
6.8. PDK selector lever is in position "D".
6.9. Leave engine running at idle speed with air conditioning switched off for 3 minutes.
6.10. Then allow engine to run at idle speed for 3 minutes with air conditioning switched on (high load).
6.11. PDK selector lever is in position "P".
6.12. Switch off ignition and wait at least 15 seconds => Adaptation values are stored.
7. Shut down the PIWIS Tester and disconnect it from the vehicle.
8. Switch off and disconnect the battery charger.
9. Perform a test drive.

End of remedial action.
