Preliminary work for removing and installing triggering unit for airbag

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

1. If the airbag triggering unit has to be replaced, the values must be read out from the Maintenance of vehicle data function prior to removal using PIWIS Tester II 9818. -> 695319 Removing and installing triggering unit for airbag - section on "Removing"
2. Switch off ignition and remove the remote control from the ignition lock.

Installation position of airbag triggering unit

1. Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
2. Disconnect electric plug connection.
2.1. Release electric plug connection -arrow-.
2.2. Release the locking clip -a-.
2.3. Open the locking clip -b- and remove the plug connection.

3. Screw off the three fastening nuts -1- on the airbag triggering unit and remove the airbag triggering unit.

Installing triggering unit for airbag

1. Position airbag triggering unit on the centre tunnel and secure with the three fastening nuts -1-. => Tightening torque: 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)+10 %-15 %

2. Connect electric plug connection.
2.1. Connect electric connector -arrow-.
2.2. Lock locking clip on the connector as far as it will go -b-.
2.3. Close the lock on the connector -a-.

Subsequent work for removing and installing triggering unit for airbag

1. Install centre console. -> 681719 Removing and installing centre console - section on "Installing" 681719 Removing and installing centre console.
2. Connect the battery and carry out instructions after connecting the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery.
3. If the airbag triggering unit was replaced:
3.1. The values in the Maintenance of vehicle data function must be compared and changed if necessary.
3.2. The airbag triggering unit must be locked.
3.3. The seat occupancy system must be calibrated on vehicles with country equipment C02 (USA, Canada, Mexico).
