Removing (main) catalytic converter

CAUTION

Hot components

- Risk of burns

-> Let hot components cool down.
-> Wear personal protective gear.

Information

Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle. Naturally, some steps also have to be performed on the opposite side of the vehicle as well. These must be carried out as a mirror image of the steps shown.

1. Loosen fastening nuts -8- on the exhaust clamp (clamping sleeve) -3- between the catalytic converter and exhaust system. Slide exhaust clamp onto the exhaust system. The exhaust clamp must not be re-used.

Loosening clamps

2. Unscrew fastening screw -5- on bracket for transmission -4-.

Loosening screws on transmission bracket

3. Screw off three fastening nuts -2- on the connection between the main catalytic converter -1- and primary catalytic converter -6-. The fastening nuts must not be re-used.

Loosening threaded joint for primary catalytic converter

4. Remove main catalytic converter by pulling it forward.
5. Remove seal between main catalytic converter and primary catalytic converter. The seal must always be replaced.

Installing (main) catalytic converter

Information

Refer to the relevant repair instructions for tightening torques regarding parts belonging to the relevant body, transmission, chassis, electrical component groups.

1. Push new exhaust clamps (clamping sleeves) -3- onto the exhaust pipes. The threaded joint must be pointing downwards.

Fitting clamps

2. Fit new seal between main catalytic converter and primary catalytic converter.
3. Fit main catalytic converter from the front.
4. Tighten three new fastening nuts -2- on the connection between the main catalytic converter -1- and primary catalytic converter -6- to => Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.).

Loosening threaded joint for primary catalytic converter

5. Tighten fastening screw -5- on bracket for transmission -4- to => Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.).

Tightening screws on transmission bracket

6. The threaded joint on the exhaust clamps must be pointing downwards. Adjust to maximum inclination and ensure that assembly length of both exhaust pipes is the same. => Installation position of exhaust clamp => Adjustment value: 10° => Tightening torque: 33 Nm (24 ftlb.)
