WM 247025 Eliminating symptoms - Engine: Re-programming DME and PDK control unit (I-no. 250) (Engine cuts out when driving off/SY2009)

Symptom
The engine cuts out in the following driving situations:
-> When you drive off from stationary and/or
-> when you brake until the vehicle is stationary.
Causes and remedial action
Cause
This is caused by defective data exchange between the control units.
Remedial action
NOTICE
Incorrect calibration of PDK transmission.
- Risk of damage to the PDK transmission or PDK components.
-> If components of the PDK transmission (hardware) were replaced, select "a) Calibration after part replacement" in the PIWIS Tester.
-> If no components of the PDK transmission (hardware) were replaced, select "b) Calibration without previous part replacement" in the PIWIS Tester.
In the event of a complaint, re-program the DME (DFI) and PDK control units.
Tools and materials
- PIWIS Tester 9718 with test software version 25.000 (or higher) installed
- Battery charger (charging current of at least 40 A)
Re-programming DME (DFI) control unit and PDK control unit
NOTICE
Fault entry in the fault memory and control unit programming aborted due to undervoltage.
- Increased current draw during diagnosis or control unit programming can cause a drop in voltage, which can result in one or more fault entries and the abnormal termination of the programming process.
-> Before starting control unit programming, connect a suitable battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A to the vehicle battery.
1. Re-program the DME (DFI) control unit using the PIWIS Tester with test software version 25.000 (or higher) installed.
1.1. Select control unit => 'DME' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
1.2. Select menu item => 'Control unit programming' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
1.3. Select function => 'Program control unit' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
1.4. Read and follow the programming instructions on the PIWIS Tester. Then press >> to continue.
1.5. Select the relevant country and confirm by pressing F7.
1.6. Select the vehicle type and confirm by pressing >>.
1.7. Select the transmission type and confirm by pressing >>.
1.8. Press F8 to start programming the DME (DFI) control unit.
A progress bar appears showing the progress of the programming procedure. Do not interrupt programming.
Information
If programming is interrupted (e.g. due to a voltage drop or if communication is aborted, etc.), programming must be repeated.
1.9. Once control unit programming is complete, follow the instructions on the PIWIS Tester.
1.10. When programming is complete, the message "Programming was completed successfully" will be displayed. Press >> to continue.
Confirm the next message relating to engine torque loss adaptation by pressing >>.
1.11. Press (double arrows) to return to the => 'Control units' menu (list of control units).
2. Re-program the PDK control unit using the PIWIS Tester with test software version 25.000 (or higher) installed.
2.1. Select control unit => 'PDK/Tiptronic' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
2.2. Select menu item => 'Control unit programming' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
2.3. Read and follow the programming instructions on the PIWIS Tester. Then press >> to continue.
2.4. Select the vehicle type and confirm by pressing >>. The selected vehicle type appears in the PIWIS Tester display.
2.5. Press F8 to start programming the PDK control unit.
The message "Writing data" will be displayed. A total of three data blocks will be written. A progress bar appears showing the progress of the programming procedure for each data block. Do not interrupt programming.
Information
If programming is interrupted (e.g. due to a voltage drop or if communication is aborted, etc.), programming must be repeated.
2.6. When programming is complete, the message "Programming was completed successfully" will be displayed. Press >> to continue.
Press >> to confirm the message on the PIWIS Tester instructing you to erase the CAN communication errors entered in some control units by control unit programming.
2.7. Press (double arrows) to return to the => 'Control units' menu (list of control units).
3. Read out the fault memory and erase it.
3.1. Select 'Special functions' in the => 'Control units' menu and confirm by pressing >>.
3.2. Select 'Erase all fault memories' in the menu => '911 (997) special functions function selection' and confirm by pressing >>.
The faults stored in the fault memories of the various control units are deleted.
If the fault memories of individual control units (e.g. DME, PDK) cannot be erased, switch the ignition off and then on again and erase the fault memories of these control units separately.
If other control units are found to have faults, which cannot be erased and are not caused by PDK and DME (DFI) control unit programming, these faults must be located and corrected.
3.3. Once you have erased the fault memories, press (double arrows) to return to the => 'Control units' menu (list of control units).

Toxic exhaust gases
- Risk of suffocation
-> Before starting the engine, position an exhaust extraction system behind the vehicle's exhaust pipes and switch it on.
Information
After the PDK and DME (DFI) control units have been programmed, the vehicle must not be driven until the engine torque loss has been adapted and the PDK transmission has been calibrated.
To obtain the temperatures required for engine torque loss adaptation and for calibrating the PDK transmission (engine temperature 80°C and transmission fluid temperature 60°C), leave the engine running in selector lever position "P" until the required temperatures are reached.
The engine and transmission fluid temperature can be read out of the relevant control unit in the "Actual values" menu using the PIWIS Tester.
4. Perform engine torque loss adaptation.
Conditions/procedure for engine torque loss adaptation:
- Engine temperature is at least 80°C.
- All loads switched off.
- PDK selector lever in position P.
- Allow engine to run at idle speed for 3 minutes with air conditioning switched off.
- Then allow engine to run at idle speed for 3 minutes with air conditioning switched on (high load).
- Switch off ignition and wait 15 seconds (adaptation values are stored).
5. Calibrate the PDK transmission using the PIWIS Tester (without previously replacing parts).
NOTICE
Incorrect calibration of PDK transmission.
- Risk of damage to the PDK transmission or PDK components.
-> If components of the PDK transmission (hardware) were replaced, select "a) Calibration after part replacement" in the PIWIS Tester.
-> If no components of the PDK transmission (hardware) were replaced, select "b) Calibration without previous part replacement" in the PIWIS Tester.
WARNING
The vehicle can move automatically while you are calibrating the transmission control unit (PDK).
- The raised vehicle can fall from the lifting platform, for example.
- Danger of crushing.
- Risk of damage to or from objects.
-> During calibration, the brake pedal must be blocked using a commercially available brake pedal lock.
-> The handbrake must be engaged.
-> The vehicle must not be raised and must be standing on its wheels.
5.1. Select control unit => 'PDK/Tiptronic' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
5.2. Select menu item => 'Calibration' and confirm your selection by pressing >>.
5.3. Read the specifications on the PIWIS Tester and confirm by pressing F7.
5.4. Press F8 to start the calibration process and follow the instructions on the PIWIS Tester. Shift travel, hydraulics and clutches are calibrated during calibration (total calibration time is approx. 20 minutes). When calibration is complete, the message "Calibration successful!" will appear in the PIWIS Tester display. Press >> to continue and follow the instructions on the PIWIS Tester to conclude the calibration process.
6. Perform adaptation of the fuel high-pressure control system -> 247019 Removing and installing DME (DFI) control unit - section on "Information" Service and Repair.
