WORKSHOP MANUAL UPDATES AND REVISIONS

1. FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS
2. FRONT SUSPENSION SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL
3. A/C LOW PRESSURE (SUCTION) HOSE CHAFING

1. FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS

Beginning March 1983, two different types of front wheel bearings will be installed on Alliance L42-M42 models. Some vehicles will be equipped with SNR bearings while others will be equipped with new type Timken bearings.

Although both types of bearings are interchangeable and have the manufacturers name on the bearing inner track ring, there is one major difference between them. The Timken bearings do not have a lip seal.

When installing Alliance front wheel bearings, remember that only SNR bearings have a seal that must be lubricated. Please make a note of this information on page G-23 of your M.R. 240 manual.

2. FRONT SUSPENSION SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL

The Sus 596-01 front spring compressor tool described on pages J-7 and J-8 of the M.R. 240 manual is not the correct tool to use on Alliance vehicles.

The correct tool for Alliance vehicles is spring compressor tool Sus 863 (see illustration). Please make the necessary tool number corrections on pages J-7 and J-8 of your M.R. 240 manual.

NOTE: Spring compressor tool Sus 863 is part of the essential tool package for Renault 18i and Fuego vehicles.
3. A/C LOW PRESSURE (SUCTION) HOSE

The A/C low pressure (suction) hose on some L42-M42 models with air conditioning may either rub against the hose retainer, the radiator top edge or the fiberglass pad on the hood when the hood is closed.

To prevent this condition, install a ribbed nylon protector sleeve over the low pressure hose as follows.

PROCEDURE

1. Starting at the metal tube-end of the hose, slide the protector sleeve over the A/C low pressure (suction) hose.

NOTE: The protector sleeve is slit along its entire length for quick installation.

2. Position the protector sleeve so that it prevents the hose from contacting the hose retainer on the radiator, the radiator top edge, and the fiberglass hood pad.
