REAR BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER LEVERS
New rear brake automatic adjuster levers, P/N 8983 100 024 (right) and P/N 8983 100 025 (left), are now available for service replacement use on Alliance/Encore models.
Use the new adjuster levers whenever replacement is necessary or when correcting one of the following conditions: uneven rear brake lining wear, or more than normal travel of the park brake hand lever.
Proper service installation of the new adjuster levers requires strict adherence to the following procedures.
Procedures
1. Remove the parking brake shield and loosen the parking brake cable slightly.
2. Remove the rear wheels and the brake drums. Discard the original stub axle nuts after removing the brake drums.
3. Inspect the parking brake lever position. Each lever should be bottomed on the rear brake shoe. If either lever is NOT bottomed and can be moved rearward, the parking cable adjustment is too tight and must be loosened further.
4. Remove the rear brake shoes from the backing plates; but, do NOT remove the parking brake lever from the rear brake shoe or disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever.
5. Check the parking brake cable movement in the support plate and housing. Replace the cable if it sticks or binds.
6. Clean the support plate ledges thoroughly. Use a fine grit emery cloth corrosion control to remove any scratches, nicks or burrs. Then, apply a light coat of brake corrosion control lubricant, P/N 899 3704 (P/N 3704- CANADA), to the ledges.
7. Inspect the adjusting screw. If the star wheel teeth are damaged or worn, replace the adjusting screw.
8. Install the original or replacement rear brake lining and the new adjuster levers, P/N 8983 100 024 (right) and P/N 8983 100 025 (left).
9. Install the brake drums.
NOTE: If replacement brake lining was installed, coat the braking surfaces of the brake drums with AERODAG-G, P/N 8983 100 005, BEFORE brake drum installation.
10. Install new stub axle nuts to retain the drums. Tighten the nuts to 160 N-m (118 ft.lbs.) torque.
11. Install the wheels. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 85 N-m (63 ft.lbs.) torque.
12. Manually adjust the rear brakes as follows:
a. Turn the adjuster star wheel until it is tight.
b. Mark the star wheel with chalk or a grease pencil.
FIGURE 1:
c. Using a fabricated tool, (see Figure 1), hold the adjuster lever away from the star wheel; and then back the star wheel off one complete revolution.
13. Adjust the parking brake cable to obtain 7 or 8 notches of movement at the parking brake lever. Refer to M.R. 245, page K-47, for this procedure.
