Operation
The shift-up indicator is fitted to cars with manual transmissions delivered to the U.S.A. market. The shift-up indicator enables the driver to use the engine characteristics in the best possible manner, thus minimising the fuel consumption. Indication is provided by a lamp which lights up when the driver should shift up, i.e. when the engine speed and throttle setting have attained certain values.

The shift-up indicator receives its supply from fuse 4 when the ignition switch is in the drive position. Shift-up indicator relay 270 receives information on the engine speed from ignition coil 5 (1985 models) or from ignition pulse amplifier 147 (1986 models). Vacuum switch 263 provides information on the vacuum in the intake manifold.

When the engine speed has exceeded 1800 + 100 r/min and the vacuum is about 0.3 bar, lamp 47K in the combined instrument will light up.

To avoid incorrect indications, the system is equipped with the following switches:

Switch 264, which switches out the system when 5th gear is engaged.

Temperature switch 262, which switches out the system when the engine temperature is below about +35 °C.

Throttle contacts 203/261, which switch out the system when the throttle is in the rest position.

In order to avoid irritating flashing of the lamp on sudden changes in the engine loading, the relay includes a time delay function which delays lighting-up of the lamp by 1.7 5 and switching-off by 1.5 5.

Fault-tracing hints

1. Turn the ignition switch to the drive position and check fuse 4. Check also that the supply to the fuse is live.

2. Check the shift-up indicator bulb.

3. Check that the switches in the system close and open the circuit under the specified conditions.

4. Check that ignition pulses are received by the shift-up indicator relay.

5. Check the connectors and earth connections.
