Cleaning the oil cooling system on cars with automatic
transmission

Cars affected
All Saab 900 with automatic transmission M80-93 and CV M94

Background
The cooling system must be cleaned after changing / reconditioning the automatic transmission

Tools
87 91 824 flushing equipment
91 44 445 oil filter

Procedure

1. Always fit a new filter 91 44 445 to the adapter plate when the system is cleaned. Lubricate the sealing surface on the adapter plate with automatic transmission fluid first so that the sealing ring on the filter will glide easily.

2. Detach the hose from the left-hand side of the gearbox.

3. Attach the hose to the filter adapter. Use an extension hose from the kit if necessary.

4. Attach the hose from the flushing equipment.

5. Place the filter adapter in a suitable location in the engine bay and secure with a cable tie.

6. Cooling circuit with thermostat
Connect the adapter plate cables to the engine temperature gauge in the car.

a. Connect the yellow sensor cable to the temperature sensor on the adapter plate, disconnect the cable connection on the engine temperature sensor and connect it together with the sensor cable.

b. Connect the adapter plate ground cable to ground.

7. Fill with transmission fluid, start the engine and check for leaks at the connections.

Important:
Apply the handbrake and depress the brake pedal

Cooling circuit without thermostat
Flush for five minutes with the selector lever in D position and the engine idling.

Important:
Make sure the radiator fan is operating so that the engine does not overheat.

Cooling circuit with thermostat
Run the gearbox warm with the selector lever in position D until the temperature gauge shows approx. 100°C (about the centre of the in-dash temperature gauge). The thermostat will then be open.

The fastest way of warming up is as follows:

a. Depress the brake pedal and apply the handbrake.
b. Put the selector lever in position D.
c. Run the engine at 1500 rpm until the temperature gauge shows approx. 100°C (at about the halfway point on the in-dash temperature gauge).

Put the selector lever in position P. Keep flushing for five minutes after the thermostat has opened.

8. Detach the flushing equipment and connect the hose from the cooler to the gearbox.

9. Check and adjust the fluid level.

WARNING:
Fluid making contact with hot engine components can cause fires.

10. Check for leaks at the connections.
