Subject: Loctite 510
Application: 900 and 9000 Models with Manual Transmissions
Due to the limited number of local jobbers who are able to source Loctite 510, Saab is now making this available through your servicing Saab Distribution Center.
Loctite 510 is a high-temperature, anaerobic compound that is used on both the 900 and 9000 manual transmissions to seal the machined surfaces between the clutch housing and the transmission case. This product remains soft until put under pressure in the absence of air and will not change the final dimensions when the case halves are bolted together. This eliminates the potential of any excess sealant getting inside the gearbox and plugging the lubrication passages.
When performing any repair to a transmission where it is necessary to split the cases, the gearbox must always be reassembled using new sealant. The machined surfaces must be meticulously cleaned using a razor blade or other suitable scraper to remove any old sealant. The surfaces must also be degreased to allow the new sealant to bond properly to the metal.
Loctite 510 is the only sealant that is approved by Saab for this application.
A small bead of Loctite 510, approximately 2-3 mm in diameter should then be applied in the center of the joint face and around the bolt holes to only one of the case halves before bolting the cases together. On 9000 model gearboxes, avoid using excess amounts near the vent so it will not get plugged. Care should also be taken to avoid disturbing the bead of sealant while mating the cases.
