SUBJECT: LOCKING DEVICE TO ASSIST ISSUE: 07/86-866 SHIFT LEVER ADJUSTMENT

NEW SPECIAL TOOL

APPLICATION: ALL 900 MODELS, M86-1/2 - WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION
From M86-1/2 car production a new gear selector mechanism (See S.I. 03/86-830) was introduced. In conjunction with this running change a new tool has been devised to assist the technician in making a shift lever adjustment.

Transmission Locking Device P/N 87-91-576

The locking device slips into a slot in the differential cover and locks the transmission in third gear. This method is more secure than relying only on the internal gear selector mechanism for holding the transmission in gear.

This has not been assigned as a special tool and its purchase is at the dealer's option. Order from your servicing Saab Parts Depot.



Adjustment Procedure (using the special tool):

1. Select third gear with the shift lever. Loosen the pinch bolt at the gear selector shaft joint ahead of the firewall.

2. Lock the gearshift lever into third gear in the gearshift housing using a 6 mm drift.

3. Slip locking device 87-91-576 into the hole in the shift lever input shaft and then into the differential cover. This provides a positive lock into third gear.

4. Tighten the pinch bolt at the gearshift joint to 22-26 ft.lb. (20-35 N-m)
