Operation
When the headlamps are switched on, the parking lights (which also include the rear lights and the number plate illumination) will also be alight. The parking lights are discussed in a separate section.

Full beam
The full beam can be switched on only when ignition switch 20 is in the parked or drive position. Current will then flow to terminal X of light switch 10.

When the light switch is in position 2, the lighting relay will be supplied from terminal 56 on the light switch. The full beam lamps will then be supplied via:

lighting relay 8

dip switch 215, which should be in position HH, and then from terminal 56A to

fuses 27 and 28 and then to corresponding full beam filament 11.

The supply from fuse 28 is also taken to full-beam warning lamp 47G.

When the full beam is switched on, the supply to the parking lights is taken from the light switch in position 2, across terminal 58.

The full beam can also be switched on by moving the dip switch to position HB, regardless of the position of the ignition switch and the light switch.

The supply is taken across terminal 30 of light switch 10 to terminal 30 of dip switch 215. When the dip switch is moved to position HB, current will flow across terminal 56A to the full-beam filaments.

Dipped beam
When the light switch is in position 2, the lighting relay will be supplied from terminal 56 on the light switches. The dipped beam lamps will then be supplied via:

lighting relay 8

dip switch 215, which is in position 0, and then from terminal 56B to

filament monitor 228A and from its terminals to

fuses 25 and 26, and from there to each dipped beam filament 12.

If one of the dipped beam bulbs should fail, the relay for the dipped beam in the filament monitor will be energized and terminal C2 will be earthed. Since a positive voltage (from fuse 13) is supplied to terminal 7 of pictogram 213, the warning lamps for the front lights and the central warning lamp will light up. See also the section entitled "Pictogram - Filament monitor".

When the dipped beam is switched on, the parking lights will receive their supply from the light switch in position 2, via terminal 58.

Fault-tracing hints
The headlamps will be operative when ignition switch 20 is in the parked or drive position and when light switch 10 is in position 2.

1. Check fuses 27 and 28 (full beam) and fuses 25 and 26 (dipped beam) and check that the supply to them is live.
2. Check the bulbs and check that the supply to them is live. Check the earthing at each lamp.
3. Check the light switch, the lighting relay and the terminals of the dip switch and the filament monitor.
4. Check the connectors, wiring and earth connections.

For particulars of fault tracing on the parking lights, see "Parking lights".

NOTE:
Whenever any of the bulbs needs changing, use a bulb of the correct rating. The bulbs in the pictogram may otherwise light up due to imbalance in the filament monitor coil.
