Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery.
3. Remove air intake duct.
4. Remove windshield washer fluid reservoir, then disconnect positive leads from terminal block and battery tray.
5. Remove fuel filter, terminal block and battery tray.
6. Disconnect electrical connector from air mass meter, then remove air mass meter. Carefully handle air mass meter.
7. Remove air cleaner intake duct.
8. Disconnect Hall transmitter electrical connector from distributor.
9. Remove cover and filter element from air cleaner.
10. Remove air cleaner housing.
11. Remove turbocharger pressure pipe.
12. Disconnect back-up light switch electrical connector.
13. Pinch slave cylinder pressure line, then remove oil pressure pipe.
14. Remove left hand engine mount.
15. Attach engine lift tool 8393977 or equivalent, onto engine lifting eyes.
16. Ensure lifting tool is properly seated on fender liner.
17. Remove left front wheel and inner fender liner.
18. Separate suspension arm from ball joint.
19. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
20. Separate the two halves of selector rod joint. Remove clip from dust cover on intermediate drive shaft.
21. Loosen intake manifold bracket bar.
22. Remove starter motor from transaxle.
23. Remove all except the one top bolt located between the engine and transaxle assembly.
24. Install locating dowels 8392128 or equivalents, into attaching bolt holes.
25. Loosen the two sub-frame pivot mountings and remove the four attaching bolts.
26. Loosen front and rear mounting brackets.
27. Remove the four attaching bolts located on the back of the sub-frame.
28. Remove bolts attaching lower wheel-arch attachment point and allow the sub-frame to hang from the anti-roll bar.
29. Loosen anti-roll bar top attaching bolt.
30. Loosen anti-roll bar link from suspension arm, then remove suspension arm.
31. Loosen, then slide universal joint boot away from joint. Remove clip, then withdraw drive shaft.
32. Attach a suitable lifting sling onto transaxle and remove the remaining attaching bolt. Withdraw transaxle and lower it to the ground.
33. Reverse procedure to install.
