Operation
The sunroof is operated by means of a two-position switch, and can be opened and closed in two ways:
- The entire sunroof can be opened fully or partially by moving it towards the rear of the car.
- The rear of the sunroof can be opened upwards (after the sunroof has been closed by moving it towards the front of the car).
Switch 181 for the sunroof actuating mechanism is supplied across fuse 9.
Opening the sunroof towards the rear of the car
When switch 181 is depressed, terminal 7 of the switch will be energized and the sunroof will open towards the rear of the car.
Current will then flow through the microswitch (actuated by the cam of the motor), through the coil of stepping relay 232 and back through the second pair of contacts in switch 181 to earth.
When the switch is depressed, terminal SV of the motor will be energized.
When the relay is energized, the second terminal of the motor will be earthed across the lower contacts (terminals 56 and 56a) in the relay and the upper contacts in the switch. The motor will start and the sunroof will be moved towards the rear. At the same time, the cam (which rotates anti-clockwise) will actuate the microswitch, so that the supply to the coil of the stepping relay will be interrupted. However, the contacts of the stepping relay will remain closed, so that the motor is connected to earth. (If the switch is released, the positive supply will be interrupted and the motor will stop.)
If the switch is kept depressed until the sunroof has been opened fully, the cam will actuate the micro- switch, so that it will revert to the rest position. The relay coil will again be energized and the relay contacts will revert to the initial position. The earth circuit of the motor will be opened and the motor will stop.
The motor is equipped with overload protection which will trip if the sunroof is obstructed for any reason.
Closing the sunroof towards the front of the car
When switch 181 is depressed, terminal 2 of the switch will be energized and the sunroof will close. Current will then flow through the coil of the stepping relay, the microswitch and the lower contacts in switch 181 back to earth.
When the switch is depressed, terminal SV of the motor will be earthed across the switch.
When the stepping relay is energized, terminal (+) of the motor will be energized across terminals 56a and 56 of the relay. The motor will start and the sunroof will move forward. At the same time, the cam (which rotates clockwise) will actuate the microswitch, so that the earth circuit of the stepping relay will be opened. However, the contacts of the stepping relay will remain closed, so that the positive supply to the motor will persist as long as the switch is kept depressed.
If the switch is kept depressed until the sunroof has closed fully, the cam will actuate the microswitch, so that it will revert to the rest position. The relay coil will be earthed and the relay contacts will open the supply to the motor, thus stopping the motor.
Opening the rear of the sunroof
The sunroof must have been closed fully by being moved to its forward position before the rear can be opened.
When switch 181 is then depressed to the closing position, the rear of the sunroof will open. The sequence of events is the same as when the sunroof is closed by being run forward. (The cam will thus rotate clockwise to the position just above the rest position shown on the diagram.)
Closing the rear of the sunroof
When the rear of the sunroof has been opened, it can be closed by setting the switch to the opening position. The sequence of events will then be the same as when the sunroof is opened by being moved towards the rear of the car.
Fault-tracing hints
The sunroof will be operative when the ignition switch is in the drive position.
1. Check fuse 9 and check that the supply to it is live.
2. Check that the supply to terminals 3 and 6 of switch 181 is live.
3. Check the supply to the stepping relay, motor and microswitch by setting the switch to different positions.
4. Check the connectors, wiring and earth connections.
