Operation
47B - Fuel gauge and warning lamp
The fuel reserve warning lamp informs the driver that the fuel content of the tank has dropped to about 10 liters.
When ignition switch 20 is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to pin 5 in the combined instrument, and then to one terminal of warning lamp 47B. The other terminal of the lamp is connected to level transmitter 46 across pin 4 in the combined instrument.
When the fuel content of the tank has dropped to about 10 liters, the warning lamp will be earthed through transmitter 46 and the lamp will light up.
47E - Charging warning lamp
The charging warning lamp informs the driver of whether or not the alternator is charging.
When ignition switch 20 is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across fuse 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to pin 5 in the combined instrument, and then to one terminal of warning lamp 47E. The other terminal of the lamp is connected to alternator 2 across pin 3 in the combined instrument.
When the alternator is not rotating or when it is not charging the battery for any reason, the circuit for the charging warning lamp will be earthed and the lamp will light up.
When the alternator is charging, terminal D+ will be at the same voltage as terminal B+. The same voltage will then be applied to both terminals of the charging warning lamp, and the lamp will be extinguished.
47F - Brake fluid level warning lamp
The brake fluid level warning lamp warns the driver that the brake fluid level is low.
When ignition switch 20 is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across fuse 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to pin 5 in the combined instrument, and then to one terminal of warning lamp 47F. The other terminal of the lamp is connected to brake fluid level warning switch 42 across pin 11 in the combined instrument. If the fluid in the brake fluid reservoir should drop to an inadmissibly low level, the contacts will close and the warning lamp will light up.
Fault-tracing hints
The brake fluid level warning lamp will be operative as soon as the ignition switch has been set to the drive position.
1. Check the brake system warning circuit by depressing the button on the brake fluid reservoir. The float will then be earthed and the lamp should light up.
2. Check fuse 13 and check that the supply to it is live.
3. Check the bulb and check that the terminals for the lamp on the circuit board for warning and indicating lamps are live.
4. Check the connectors, the wiring and the earth connection.
47G - Full-beam warning lamp
The full-beam warning lamp informs the driver of whether the full beams are switched on.
One terminal of the warning lamp is supplied from full-beam fuse 28 (1987)/full-beam fuse 3 (1988), via pin 2 in the combined instrument. The other terminal of the lamp is earthed across pin 7 in the combined instrument.
47J - Indicating lamp for the rear-window electric heater
This indicating lamp informs the driver when the heating for the rear window is switched on. In this case, one terminal of the lamp is supplied via pin 10 in the combined instrument. The other terminal of the lamp is earthed across pin 7 in the combined instrument.
47K - Lamp for shift-up indication (Us - manual gearbox)
The shift-up indication lamp informs the driver as to when he should shift up.
One terminal of the lamp is then supplied via pin 14 in the combined instrument. The other terminal of the lamp is earthed across pin 7 in the combined instrument.
47M - Handbrake warning lamp
The handbrake warning lamp warns the driver that the handbrake is applied.
When ignition switch 20 is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across fuse 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to pin 5 in the combined instrument, and then to one terminal of warning lamp 47M. The other terminal of the lamp is connected to handbrake switch 43 across pin 13 in the combined instrument. As long as the handbrake is applied, the lamp will remain alight.
Fault-tracing hints
The warning lamp will be operative when the ignition switch is in the drive position.
1. Check fuse 13 and check that the supply to it is live.
2. Check the bulb and check that the terminals for the lamp on the circuit board for warning and indicating lamps are live.
3. Disconnect and earth the cable to the handbrake switch. If the lamp lights up, the circuit is in good condition.
4. Check the connectors, wiring, handbrake switch and the earth connection.
47N - Warning lamp for the rear fog lights (SE, FI, EU, GB)
This warning lamp informs the driver as to whether the rear fog lights are switched on.
One terminal of the warning lamp is then supplied from pin 6 in the combined instrument. The other terminal of the lamp is earthed across pin 7 in the combined instrument.
47P - CHECK ENGINE warning lamp
This indicating lamp informs the driver when a fault occurs in the LH fuel system and/or the EZK ignition system.
When ignition switch 20 is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across fuse 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to pin 5 in the combined instrument, and then to one terminal of warning lamp 47P.
The other terminal of the lamp is connected to control unit 200 for the fuel injection system and to control unit 176 for the EZK ignition system.
47Q - ABS warning lamp
This indicating lamp informs the driver when a fault occurs in the ABS system.
When ignition switch 20 is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across fuse 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to pin 5 in the combined instrument, and then to one terminal of warning lamp 47Q. The other terminal of the lamp is connected to pin 27 of ABS control unit 291 and to diode 303A, across pin 27 in the combined instrument.
47R - Washer fluid level warning lamp
The washer fluid level warning lamp informs the driver that the washer fluid is running low.
When ignition switch 20 is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across fuse 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to pin 5 in the combined instrument, and then to one terminal of warning lamp 47R.
The other terminal of the lamp is connected to level switch 195 across pin 9 in the combined instrument. When the level in the washer fluid container drops to 0.5 litre, the level switch closes and the lamp lights up.
Fault-tracing hints
The warning lamp will be operative when the ignition switch is in the drive position.
1. Check fuse 13 and check that the supply to it is live.
2. Check the bulb and check that the terminals for the lamp on the circuit board for warning and indicating lamps are live.
3. When the level in the container drops to 0.5 dm3 (liters), the lamp should light up.
4. Check the connectors, wiring and the earth connection.
Testing of indicating and warning lamps
Certain lamps on board 47 for indicating and warning lamps can be checked by turning ignition switch 20 to a special test position.
The test position is located between the drive position and the start position.
When the ignition switch is in the drive position, a positive supply is taken across fuse 13 and distribution terminal 159 (+15) to the lamps to be tested (terminal 5 of board 47 for indicating and warning lamps).
When the ignition switch is then turned to the test position, the positive supply will remain and the lamps will be earthed simultaneously, since terminals C and C1 in the ignition switch will be interconnected.
The following lamps are connected when the ignition switch is in the test position:
47B - Fuel reserve warning lamp
47F - Brake fluid level warning lamp
47M - Handbrake warning lamp
47R - Washer fluid level warning lamp
