Subject: Using the ABS Tester On 1990 Saab Models

Application: All 1990 900 and 9000 Models
Changes to certain components in the ABS system for 1990 model Saab cars necessitate a modification to the tester and minor procedural changes when using the ABS Tester on M90 cars.

^ The tester's 35-pin connector must be modified to fit M90 ABS control units.

^ To accommodate the change to 46-tooth sensor wheels, "ABS type 2" must be selected on the tester.

^ Error code 009 will always be displayed when using the ABS Tester on an M90 car.

Figure 1.:

Modifying the ABS Tester Connector

The M90 ABS control unit has a different connector profile. In order for the 35-pin connector on the ABS Tester to fit this new profile, the connector must be modified. This modification will still permit the tester to be used on 1988 and 1989 models.

1. Use a pair of diagonal cutters to cut a recess in both sides of the Tester connector housing as shown in Figure 1.

CAUTION!

When the tester is connected to the ABS control unit, the tester's power supply lead must also be connected. The ABS control unit will be damaged if the tester remains connected only by the 35-pin plug for a period of time.

Selecting the ABS System Version

When the tester is powered up, it automatically selects ABS-type 1. This is the system version that is compatible with a 94-tooth sensor wheel which is fitted to 1988-89 model cars. For 1990 model year cars, ABStype 2 (which is compatible with a 46-tooth sensor wheel) must be selected.

1. Selection of the ABS-system version must be made within four (4) seconds of powering up the tester by pressing the two function buttons simultaneously. "t 46" and "ABS-TYPE 2" will now appear on the display (Figure 2).
Error Code 009

When the ABS Tester is used on M90 models, error code 009 will always be displayed. This error code is due to a significantly lower voltage reading across pins 9 and 10 of the M90 ABS control unit, which the tester identifies as a fault.

If error code 009 occurs with other error codes, it should be left until last. In this case, after the other faults have been investigated and corrected and the ABS warning light is extinguished, then the 009 fault diagnosis need not be carried out. If the warning light remains lit, then the fault diagnosis must be performed.

If the ABS warning light is on and error code 009 occurs by itself, the fault diagnosis routine for that code must be carried out.

Note

In order to connect the ABS tester's pressure sensor on a model 900, an adapter hose is required. Part number information and service procedures will be issued in the future.
