Brake Pad Recommendations

Application:
1988- 900 Models 1986- 9000 Models

Supersedes: PSI 08/90-0017 (Sec. 5, p. 1)

The primary front brake pad recommendation for 1988- 9000 Turbo models and 1990- 9000 naturally-aspirated models has been changed to a T4039 composition pad set, P/N 89 93 768. The primary rear brake pad recommendation for all 1986- 9000 models has been changed to a revised DB 870 composition pad set, P/N 41 96 317. These new pads provide the best available combination of pad/rotor wear and performance characteristics.

For 1988- 900 models, the front brake pad set remains the DM 127 composition pad set, P/N 41 07 116, and the rear brake pad set remains the original DB870 composition pad set, P/N 89 68 026.

Although it appears that the same DB 870 friction material composition is used on both 900 and 9000 rear pad sets, they are in fact different. The now rear pad set introduced for 9000 models, P/N 41 96 317, must not be used on 900 models due to risk of adversely affecting the front-to-rear brake balance. Further differentiation between the 900 and 9000 rear pads is noticed as the 9000 pads have "M9000" printed on the backing plate.

In the event of customer complaints about brake pulsation, first check the lateral run-out and thickness variation of the brake rotors, and also the lateral run-out of the wheel hubs according to the information found in the current section of 900 Service Manual 5:1.
