FILE IN VOL.

SEC. PG.

Issue: 01/90-1203
Subject: Faulty DI/APC Control Units

Application: Early 1990 9000 Turbo Models

Certain early 1990 9000 Turbo models may be equipped with control units for the Direct Ignition (DI)/APC system that contain an incorrect internal component. This fault can cause ignition system problems in cold weather (less than 20~ F). These problems can include hard starting or wet and fouled spark plugs.

The cars involved are within the chassis number ranges listed below:

L1000077-L1003642 L2000045-L2002670

On these cars the DI/APC ECU should first be inspected to determine if the ECU is part of a production batch that must be replaced. Not all cars that fall within these VIN ranges will require ECU replacement.

Parts Required:

DI/APC Control Unit 91 19 397

NOTE

All DI/APC control units in spare parts stocks are correct, even if there is no production code as described below.

Inspection Procedure:

1. To gain access to the DI/APC control unit, adjust the travel of the driver's seat to the maximum forward and raised position.

2. Remove the quarter-turn plastic screw to remove the carpeted cover panel over the ECU, then remove the two screws from the metal support bracket beneath the carpet. Because the ECU is tightly held in place by the tension of the upper and lower brackets, the ECU may be difficult to remove.

Figure 1:

3. Check the label on the top of the connector housing (See Figure 1). ECUs that carry a code of "C A03" "C A04" etc, must be replaced. The "C A" is the determining code; the numeric digits that follow are irrelevant. ECUs with codes other than "C A" do NOT need to be replaced.

4. Once the inspection, and if necessary, ECU replacement have been completed, the Campaign Modification Plate must be stamped. Using a 3/8" punch, stamp the numeral "8" in box A2 (See Figure 2).

Warranty Information:

For Warranty Claims, use Failure Coding 34040-03-0-01-08 if only an inspection is made. If the control unit needs to be replaced, use Failure Coding 34040-03-0-01-01. Labor time allowance is Operation No. 34040 (0.3 hour). No diagnostic time is allowed.
