Crankshaft position sensor, malfunction



Fault symptom

The engine fails to start or misfires.


Conditions

Longer than 0.2 5 between firing pulses at 1700 rpm. (If the engine is running at 1700 rpm and it momentarily drops to 150 rpm the trouble code will be detected.)


Diagnostic procedure




1 Check the crankshaft position sensor's power supply

- Ignition switch in ON position.

- Gear in neutral.

- Unplug the crankshaft position sensor's H4-8 connector and connect the test lamp to pin 1 and battery positive (B+).
The test lamp should light up.

- Connect the test lamp to pins 1 and 3.
The test lamp should light up.

Result OK?
YES Continue with point 2.
NO Repair or replace the lead in question and proceed to point 3.




2 Check the control module's crankshaft position sensor input

- Ignition switch in the ON position.

- Gear in neutral.

- Unplug the crankshaft position sensor's H4-8 connector.

- Select command code 302 (-M90) or 202 (M91-) on the ISAT scan tool.

- The scan tool display should show 8B100.

- Connect a jumper lead between sockets 2 and 3 on the female connector.

- The scan tool display should show 8B000.

Are all readings OK?
YES Remove and inspect the crankshaft position sensor. Change it if necessary and continue with point 3.
NO Repair or replace the lead connected to pin 23 of the control module and continue with point 3.

3 Final check

- Clear the diagnostic trouble code.

- Implementation of driving cycle:

Drive the car at varying engine loads and rpm for 5 minutes.

- Evaluation of driving cycle:

Check whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs.

Does the diagnostic trouble code recur?
YES Continue with "Before Control Module Replacement". Service and Repair
NO The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
