Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery.
2. Remove washer fluid container.
3. Remove holder with connectors, terminal blocks and positive battery cable. If car is equipped with ABS braking system, release stay for hydraulic unit.
4. Remove battery tray, then bolts for cover over bulkhead.
5. Remove rubber strip, then lift cover and disconnect washer hoses from nozzle, then remove cover.
6. Separate speedometer cable connector, then pull speedometer cable and washer hose through rubber grommet.
7. Disconnect electrical connectors from air mass meter and air intake temperature sensor, then disconnect hose on air delivery pipe from bypass valve.
8. Remove delivery pipe between throttle housing and intercooler.
9. Remove starter motor retaining nuts, then secure starter motor to steering gear.
10. Separate selector rod universal joint, then the selector rod.
11. Pinch slave cylinder pressure hose using suitable clamping tongs, then separate pressure line.
12. Remove upper bolts for stay at wheel housing, then release lefthand engine mount.
13. Position lifting beam tool No. 83 93 977 on fender edges, then attach to engine for support.
14. Disconnect negative battery cable from battery and reversing light switch connector from gearbox.
15. Separate suspension arm from ball joint, then remove anti-roll bar.
16. Remove lower bolt for stay at wheel housing, then three bottom bolts from joint between engine and gearbox.
17. Remove center and lefthand skirts from spoiler.
18. Separate subframe at front and rear, then lower using a suitable jack.
19. Remove universal joint, then lower vehicle.
20. Attach suitable lifting device to transaxle and remove remaining engine to transaxle attaching bolt, then pull transaxle away from engine and lower to ground.
21. Reverse procedure to install, tightening bolts to specifications.
