Figure 1:

A running change in early 1991 production has introduced a new front sensor design for the SRS (Airbag) system in 900 models. The new sensor has been altered to integrate the three-pin connector into the housing of the sensor (Figure 1). The previous design located the connector at the end of a short pigtail lead. The new sensor is easily distinguished by its black color.

These new sensors also supersede the previous sensors in spare parts supply. In order to install a new sensor into a 900 which was originally equipped with the pigtail harness sensor design, the wiring harness leading to the sensor must be adjusted slightly to provide the few inches of extra harness length required to attach the connector to the sensor housing.
Wiring Harness Adjustment Procedure, LH Sensor

The additional length of harness required to reach the new sensor is located inside the passenger compartment, just behind the ABS brake accumulator.

Pull down the sound insulation panel behind the knee bolster next to the hood release lever. Reach up behind the insulation panel and locate the SRS sensor harness (next to the hood release cable). Push approximately three or four inches of harness out through the grommet.

The extra harness length can be worked down toward the sensor, through the tie strap at the ABS valve block. If necessary, cut the tie strap (note location of strap before cutting), adjust the harness and install a new tie strap.

Wiring Harness Adjustment Procedure, RH Sensor

The additional harness length is contained in a loop under the hood on the RH side, located above the vacuum tank. The harness should be removed from the spring clip in the center of the fender and the cable clamp near the washer reservoir must be loosened in order to pull the harness through.
