Transaxle

The engine and transaxle must be removed as a complete unit.
1. Remove engine and transaxle from vehicle, refer to Engine/Service and Repair.
2. Separation of engine/transaxle assembly is not necessary to overhaul the transaxle. If transaxle is to be overhauled while attached to engine, flywheel and starter must be removed.
3. If transaxle separation is required, proceed as follows:
a. Drain engine oil and remove clutch cover.
b. Using slide hammer tool No. 8390270 and joint tool No. 8790529 or equivalents, remove clutch shaft.
c. Remove three slave cylinder retaining bolts.
d. Remove all engine-to-transaxle attaching bolts, noting length and position for reassembly.
e. Release clip for oil filler pipe at intake manifold.
f. Carefully lift engine off transaxle. At the same time remove slave cylinder with release bearing guide sleeve and bearing. If engine and transaxle fail to separate, do not attempt to force them apart without first ensuring all bolts are removed.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure mating surfaces of engine and transaxle are clean and the two guide sleeves are fitted in transaxle.
b. Install a new gasket to transaxle mating surface. Apply sealing compound to both sides of gasket and six bolts. Refer to Engine/Engine Lubrication/Oil Pan, Engine/Service and Repair. Ensure bolts are correctly installed, as bolts are different lengths.
