Transaxle
1. Scribe hood hinge reference marks, then remove hood.
2. Install tool 83 93 209 or equivalent under upper control arm on right hand side.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable, then positive cable.
4. Drain cooling system into suitable container.
5. Loosen lug nuts on right front wheel, then raise and support front of vehicle.
6. Disconnect shift linkage from transmission.
7. Disconnect speedometer cable, then remove exhaust pipe-to-clamp bracket attaching bolt from transmission.
8. Loosen boot clamps on inner ends of drive axles, and slide boots outward.
9. Remove right front wheel and tire assembly.
10. Separate ball joint from lower control arm.
11. Separate universal joint and position steering knuckle aside.
12. Disconnect battery positive cable from body clips.
13. Disconnect ground cable from transmission.
14. Disconnect starter motor wiring.
15. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
16. Disconnect and plug pressure line from power steering pump.
17. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor drive belt.
18. On all models, disconnect coolant hoses from heat exchanger valve, expansion tank, thermostat housing and bottom of radiator.
19. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from components on left hand side of engine:
a. Air mass meter.
b. Throttle switch.
c. A.I.C. actuator.
d. Injection valves.
e. Thermostatic switch.
f. Ground connections at forward lifting lug.
20. Disconnect the following electrical connectors from components on right hand side of engine:
a. A/C compressor, if equipped.
b. Alternator and regulator.
c. Blue wire at oil pressure switch.
d. A.I.C. actuator.
e. Yellow/white wire at temperature sensor.
f. Gray wire at knock sensor.
21. Disconnect electrical connector from clip on fuel injection manifold, from rear of engine and from coolant hose between engine and coolant overflow tank.
22. Remove harness from engine compartment and position aside.
23. Remove alternator drive belt, then remove alternator and position aside.
24. Disconnect brake servo hose from intake manifold, then disconnect throttle cable.
25. On models equipped with A/C, remove compressor and position aside.
26. On all models, disconnect fuel lines from front of fuel injection manifold and fuel pressure regulator.
27. Remove ignition coil, then disconnect turbo pressure line from turbocharger and induction air cooler/throttle housing.
28. Remove auxiliary fan.
29. Remove turbocharger air mass meter together with suction pipe.
30. Disconnect vacuum hoses from solenoid valve and the crankcase ventilation system from suction pipe.
31. Disconnect electrical connector from hall switch and coil in distributor.
32. Unfasten hall switch cable from clips on clutch cover.
33. Disconnect solenoid valve hoses from turbocharger and charging pressure regulator.
34. Disconnect and plug hydraulic hose from clutch slave cylinder.
35. Remove engine mounting bolts.
36. Attach suitable lifting device to engine/transmission assembly, then raise assembly until left hand inner universal joint can be disconnected.
37. Continue to raise engine/transmission assembly and disconnect oil cooler hoses and power steering pump hose.
38. Remove engine/transmission assembly from chassis. Place protective covers on universal joints and boots to prevent entry of dirt.
39. Separation of the engine/transmission assembly is not necessary to overhaul the transmission. If the transmission is to be overhauled while attached to the engine, the flywheel and starter must be removed. If transmission separation is desired, use the following procedure:
a. Clean engine/transmission assembly.
b. Drain engine oil, then remove ring gear cover.
c. Using slide hammer No. 83 90 270 and joint 87 90 529, remove clutch shaft.
d. Remove slave cylinder attaching bolts, then engine-to-transmission attaching bolts.
e. Carefully separate transmission from engine. Do not force attempt to force engine and transmission apart without first ensuring all bolts have been removed.
40. Reverse procedure to install.
