Connecting ABS-System Tester

Fig. 4 Connecting Tester Power Lead:

1. Prior to connecting the ABS system tester perform the following checks:
a. Brake fluid level should be at the MAX line on the reservoir, ensure accumulator is fully charged with fluid.
b. Inspect all fuses in ABS fuse box.
c. Ensure relays for ECU and pump motor are correctly installed.
d. Inspect electrical connections at pressure switch, main valve, fluid level switch, electric motor for the pump, valve block and wheel sensors.
e. Check electrical grounding connections at the front of the hydraulic unit and TSI socket in engine compartment.
2. Switch ignition off, then remove ECU cover located at rear lefthand corner of engine compartment.
3. Release ECU retaining clips, then disconnect ECU.
4. Connect tester lead between ECU and ABS wiring harness connector using a two-way 35-pin connector.
5. Support ECU and connectors using vinyl ties, then run tester electrical lead through driver's window.
6. Connect power supply lead to battery negative terminal, then the positive terminal.
7. Run power lead through the window and connect it to the tester as shown in Fig. 4. Ensure connector is installed correctly at the tester, if connector is installed upside down, tester circuitry may be burnt out.
8. Tester will now automatically select ABS-type 1. Always switch off the ignition before unplugging test lead connector from the ECU. Failure to do so can result in ECU circuitry being burnt out.
