Transaxle

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant into suitable container.
2. Disconnect windshield washer hose and hood hinge links. Scribe hood hinge reference marks, then remove hood.
3. Disconnect and/or remove the following components:
a. Upper radiator hose and engine ground straps.
b. Wiring harness connectors to distributor and ignition coil and distributor high tension lead.
c. Disconnect hoses, then remove pre-heater valve.
d. Hoses to vacuum pump, crankcase ventilation system and brake booster.
e. Hydraulic hose to clutch slave cylinder. Plug hose and cylinder openings to prevent contamination.
f. Main harness connector at rear of engine.
g. Wiring harness connectors at alternator and oil pressure switch.
h. Heater and expansion tank hoses.
i. Lower radiator hose and throttle cable at housing and bracket.
j. Wiring harness connector to oxygen sensor.
k. Fuel lines to engine. Prior to removal, clean area surrounding fuel lines to prevent contamination. After fuel line removal, plug openings to prevent fuel spillage.
l. Oil cooler hoses. Plug hoses and fittings.
m. Remove power steering pump and set aside.
n. Wiring harness connectors to APC solenoid, if equipped.
o. Remove APC solenoid, if equipped.
p. Wiring harness connector to knock sensor, if equipped.
q. Remove compressor mounting bolts, secure compressor in righthand wheel housing, disconnect A/C wiring harness connectors and remove auxiliary fan, if equipped.
4. Remove clamps and boots from inner ends of driveshafts.
5. Place spacer tool No. 83 93 209, or equivalent, between upper control arm underside and car body. Insert tool from wheel housing side, ensure tool is properly positioned to unload suspension when vehicle is raised.
6. Raise and support front of vehicle.
7. Unbolt lower control arm from steering knuckle, pull knuckle and axle assembly outwards, then support against outer end of lower control arm.
8. Disconnect shift linkage from transaxle.
9. Disconnect exhaust pipe from engine.
10. Remove speedometer cable from engine.
11. Remove rear engine mounting bolts.
12. Loosen front engine mounting nut enough to allow mount to be lifted out of bracket.
13. On models with power steering, disconnect hydraulic hoses at servo pump and plug exposed openings.
14. On all models, install suitable lifting device on engine and raise engine/transaxle assembly slightly. Move engine/transaxle assembly from side to side to free universal joints, then remove assembly.
15. Remove engine/transaxle assembly from chassis. Place protective cover on universal joints and boots to prevent entry of dirt.
16. Separation of the engine/transaxle assembly is not necessary to overhaul the transaxle. If the transaxle is to be overhauled while attached to the engine, the flywheel and starter must be removed. If transaxle separation is desired, use the following procedure:
a. Clean engine/transaxle assembly.
b. Drain engine oil, then remove ring gear cover.
c. Using slide hammer No. 83 90 270 and joint No. 87 90 529, or equivalents, to remove clutch shaft.
d. Remove slave cylinder attaching bolts, then engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
e. Carefully separate transaxle from engine. Do not force engine and transaxle apart without first ensuring all bolts have been removed.
17. Reverse procedure to install, tightening bolts to specifications.
