Replacement of Intermediate Shaft

To remove:

1. Remove the gearbox. See Service Manual 4:2 Automatic transmission.

2. Plug all oil passages and wash the gearbox.

3. Mount the gearbox in a floor stand by means of gearbox holder P/N 87 91 469. Use tool P/N 87 91 451. Drain the gearbox oil.

4. Remove the torque converter's holding tool P/N 87 91 816.

NOTE
Oil will run out when the torque converter is removed.

Take care to avoid damaging the shaft sealing ring in the torque converter housing.

5. Withdraw the torque converter, using tool P/N 87 91 766.

6. Rotate the gearbox one quarter turn and undo the 18 bolts securing the torque converter housing.

7. Lift away the torque converter housing by grasping the right-hand drive shaft and speedometer drive. Remove the gasket.

8. Lift out the differential.

9. Unscrew the pump with partition plate and brake band C by undoing the eight bolts in the outer ring.

NOTE
Leave the gearbox in this position.

10. Remove the shim holder and shim or shims. Loosen the brake band adjusting screw a couple of turns.

11. Lift out clutch A and clutch B with 2nd gear one-way clutch from the turbine shaft. This will be facilitated if the shaft is turned back and forth slightly.

12. Remove the 2nd gear one-way clutch.

13. Remove clutch B from clutch A.

14. Remove the engine shaft together with clutch E.

15. Remove the entire intermediate shaft with both thrust washers and needle bearings.





16. Change the intermediate shaft. Note the difference between the old (A) and new (B) intermediate shafts.
