Subject:
Correcting Risk of Wiring Harness Chafing Near Main Fuse Box

Application:
1994-1995 9000 Models Up to VIN Serial No. S1022839 inclusive

Introduction:

It has been determined that on a number of 1994 and 1995 9000 models the wiring harness connected to the main fuse box can chafe against the bracket which holds the fuse box and air duct in place possibly creating a short circuit that could damage the main harness. These vehicles must have a cable tie added to the wiring harness to hold it away from the bracket. Owners of affected vehicles will receive a letter from Saab Cars USA, Inc.

New vehicles in your inventory must also be corrected.

Cars Affected:

1994-1995 9000 Models up to and including VIN Serial No. S1022839

This wiring was rerouted as of model year 1994 to accommodate the passenger side airbag.

Parts Required:

Cable tie 79 71 880

An initial order of parts will not be made. Source locally or order above part number from Saab.

Action Required:

1. Remove the lower dashboard panel on the passenger side. See Figure 1.

Depress the center portion of the retaining buttons to release the button. Do not push the center portion all the way through. See Figure 2.

2. Not all 1995 vehicles within the serial number range must be corrected. Certain cars were checked and corrected before being delivered to dealers. For new cars in stock, check the DCS Recall Inquiry before any work is done. An owner with a letter from Saab Cars USA, Inc. indicates a car that needs repair. If in doubt about a repair, always check the DCS Recall Inquiry.

3. Check whether the wiring harness has signs of damage (i.e. chafing) in the area where there is a possibility of chafing. See Figure 3. If any cable is damaged, wrap insulating tape around it.

4. Undo the two screws holding the main fuse box. Bend down the fuse box and fit cable tie, P/N 79 71 880 so that the cables are clear of the bracket and the cable tie fits tight in the notch. See Figure 4.

CAUTION:
Do not tighten the cable tie too hard. The cables could pull free from the main fuse box if they are tied down too hard.

5. Fit the main fuse box and the lower dashboard panel. See Figure 5 for refitting of the button.
