Service Procedure
Action:To reduce the risk of damage to the engine oil cooler in a collision where the front of the car is impacted above the front bumper, several measures were introduced in production during model year 1994:
^ the welds on the engine oil cooler have been reinforced
^ a curved upper connection for the engine oil cooler hose was introduced
^ two cut-outs in a side panel on the radiator member were introduced
Earlier cars, up to and including VIN Serial No. R1027659 should be fitted with a protective cover mounted on the engine oil cooler.
NOTE:
The engine must be cold when the work is started.
Oil Cooler Cover:
1. Assemble the protective cover and lower holder. The holder is supplied with the spare parts kit and comes in two sizes: a long, lower bracket for 120 mm oil coolers and a short, lower bracket for 75 mm oil coolers. See Table above. Do not tighten the bolt.
2. Unplug the A/C compressor's electrical connector.
3. Unscrew the bolt securing the cooler and radiator assembly to the upper radiator member and press the assembly towards the engine. If the car is equipped with an intercooled turbocharger. the upper securing bolt for the condenser and/or intercooler must be unscrewed from the radiator.
4. Fit the protective cover, complete with lower holder, over the engine oil cooler.
5. Fit the upper bolt in the protective cover.
IMPORTANT
When fitting a 75 mm oil cooler, a hole for the upper bolt must be made (using a file) in the air deflector.
6. Tighten the bolt in the lower holder. Tightening torque: 1 Nm (0.74 ft.lbs.).
7. Feel to make sure the holder is not loose. If it is, it should be modified as indicated in Figure 2 by bending the "hook" on the lower bracket up against the cooler. Do not bend this more than 3 mm.
8. Tighten the upper retaining bolt in the protective frame. Tightening torque: 4 Nm (3 ft.lbs.).
9. Reinstall the cooler and radiator assembly to its proper position and tighten the bolt in the assembly. Plug in the A/C compressor connector.
