Subject:
Adjustment of Steering Wheel on Vehicles Equipped with Airbag
Application:
1989- 9000
Some customers may complain that they have difficulty in finding a comfortable driving position because the steering wheel is not adjustable on 9000 vehicles equipped with an airbag. The Factory has now developed a service procedure which will allow the steering wheel to be adjusted outward by 25 mm. See Figure 1. Note that this does not mean that the steering wheel is now telescoping. Follow the Action outlined below to carry out this modification.
Cars Affected:
1989- 9000 models equipped with driver's side airbag
Parts:
Washer (3) 80 73 108
Action:
1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
2. Remove the steering wheel and coil spring. Be sure to point the wheels in the straight ahead position before removing the coil spring, taking care not to damage it.
3. Remove the steering column cover pieces.
4. Remove the 3 screws from the combination switch bracket. Pull the bracket and switches back to allow access to the electrical connectors.
5. Unplug the direction indicator control's connectors, one yellow, one green and one black.
6. Unplug the windshield wiper control's connectors.
7. Remove the through bolt which locates the steering column shaft. Use a 16 mm socket on the bolt and a 17 mm wrench on the nut side. See Figure 2-A.
8. Remove the spacer. See Figure 2-B. The spacer should be replaced by three (3) washers, P/N 80 73 108. See Figure 2.
9. Fit the through bolt in place again and screw the nut on finger tight.
10. Adjust the position of the steering wheel to suit the customer and then tighten the bolt again.
Tightening torque: 10 N-m
WARNING
The bolt must not be tightened harder. It should be possible for the steering wheel to move down against the dashboard when subjected to a force of 500-1,000 N.
11. Refit the items in reverse order of Steps 1-6. Take care not to damage the coil spring. Enter the radio security code to activate the audio system.
Warranty Information:
This adjustment is considered to be a customer convenience item and therefore not claim able under the Saab Warranty.
For your reference, the adjustment takes 0.7 hrs.
